My daughter and son-in-law are still in college and are looking for a no annual fee (or low fee) credit card that has a good cash back or points program. My wife and I have a Citibank Thank You rewards program account. The points used to work out to a 1% reward, but the points are no longer as valuable (about 0.85% now), so not sure I’d recommend it to them.

This is something they will pay off each month.

Chase Freedom Unlimited. As their spend goes up and diversifies, they can look at some of the annual fee cards.

Citi double cash is a great catch all card with no annual fee

1% on purchases
1% when you pay off the balance

Effectively 2%, assuming you pay off the balance. At least that encourages them to not carry a balance as much.

It also has a $200 sign up bonus for spending just $1,500 in the first 6 months which is pretty low spend requirement even for a college student.

Discover used to offer cards to anyone in college with a pulse. They have a decent cash back option.

Citi has a 5% in your most commonly used category card.

Fidelity has a 2% back into an investment account if you want them to start thinking about investing

Discover has a basic cash back card that’s easy to get and decent for young people starting out. 1% on every purchase. 5% on different things each quarter. This quarter is grocery stores and Wal Mart. Last quarter was 5% at gas stations.

Amex blue cash everyday for free, or blue cash preferred for $100/yr.

My current setup is this:

TD Cash Credit Card for groceries and gas, I get 3% and 2% back respectively for those categories (you can choose your categories each quarter, 1% back for everything else).

Chase Amazon for Amazon purchases

Caesar's Rewards Credit Card for everything else, I love going to Cherokee and other casinos occasionally. Really awesome 1st year benefits for those who are Caesars Rewards members.

Capital One Savor One card is 3% cash back on dining, grocery, and entertainment, most of what college kids spend their money on anyway.
