I think it's time for America to cut social security altogether (serious)

The problem is neither party wants to upset the boomer generation. And I'm totally against raising the SS tax by 2% just so it's intact for another 75 years.

Why are we procrastinating about a problem that's been plaguing us since 1989? Are both parties afraid of losing voters?

Idk what the solution is, but I’d at least like the ability to opt out.

With the amount that a middle to upper middle class individual is donating to the American government for SS, millions of dollars per person are being lost over the course of a career.

How about we stop letting people collect from it that never contributed?

I’m fine with it if I get the 200,000 dollars that I’ve paid in over the last 30 years!

It just needs tweaked. It’s currently not worth it but many variables are affecting that like high inflation, government spending, fraud, and many other things.

Tell you what:

Give me back what I’ve paid into it over the past 40 years - nothing more nothing less. I won’t even ask for interest. Then end the program so we don’t have to pay anymore. Then we have a deal.

It's an intergenerational ponzi scheme that will be all dried up by the time my generation is eligible to collect it. So yeah, abolish that bullshite and give every cent back to each American that paid into it.

Im 58 and the first year of Gen X. I’ve paid in an absolute shitload of money in to SS. It would be millions if it was in an index fund all these years. I have to get my SS as part of my retirement.

How exactly can it just be cut off for people in my age bracket?

We should be allocating that money to young, productive people. We’re currently paying rich people to not work. It’s arse backwards if we’re going to have an entitlement like that.

You need to cut SSI that feeds half of the world population. Even wealthy people from other countries come here, hide their assets, and receive SSI.

SS would be fine if the politicians didn't use it for a slush fund to enrich themselves and their rich buddies.

It needs to be phased out over about a 40 year period to avoid screwing everyone that paid in. If you're 25 now and have only been paying in significantly for 3 years, your benefit wouldn't be much, but you could invest yourself for the next 40 years. If you're near retirement, you'd get what you were promised.
