Well, Mondo is the GOAT in Pole Vaulting, pretty hard to not argue that , at this point…

Sergey’s best according according to wiki was 6.14. Mondo crushed that. I remember Bubka growing up too I guess maybe he was just as unreal in his time as Mondo is now

Sergie Bubka was using fiberglass poles. Technology has vastly improved the sport. Bubka was a beast like Mondo is today. It would have been fun to watch these two go at in the same timeline.

I was about to post John Pennel but someone beat me to it. Bob Groseclose had some real track greats at Northeast Louisiana State College, later NLU, now ULM back in the day. Several All Americans in fact.

Mo Isom was pretty good at the pole vault, if you know what I mean.

broke the WR 14 times with that equipment. Mondo has broken it 9. If he competed today Mondo would have more competition than he would like. Kendrick is a great vaulter in his own right but he isn’t Bubka.

actually it really isn’t that hard at all. Track, poles, etc are ALL way different now. Bubka broke that record and nobody was close to him. He did it 14 times - FOURTEEN.

Can’t tell idiots nothing on here. How about the r track surface changing. They actually believe everyone is THAT much faster. Here is a hint - NO WOMAN WILL EVER BE REMOTELY CLOSE TO FLO JO. NONE.
When you line them up, give me Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson.
Lewis might be tGOAT T&F athlete of all time.

I’m older. Try Bob Richards. He was on a lot of the Wheaties cereal boxes. Late 60s.

[quote]LINK ] great video by LSU.

I remember Bob well. I’m a lot older too and an avid T&F fan since I was a kid even though baseball was my sport. I was always amazed at how fast Billy Cannon ran. That guy was amazing.

I helped my dad run the pole vault at the Byrd Relays. John Pennel had just set the world record. I believe he was the first to exceed 17 ft. This was the transition from the steel pole to fiber glass. NLSC Indians and Coach Grosglose (sp).

You can’t go by that. The measure is how they each did compared to their contemporaries, who were using the same technology in training, medicine, and poles.

Billy Cannon won the SEC 100 yard dash and the shot put. Both performances were world class.

and if you think about it, it is a really strange track and field event....nothing close to it.

I often wonder if the pole will snap....that could be nasty.

Exactly. That video I posted explains it all including how the fiberglass carbon reinforced poles today are not nearly the same as the old fiberglass poles. They are lighter, stronger and have more bend which is all explained by physics. He even shows a chart on how the equipment changes impacted the records.
He didn’t even get into the track surface changes which we know has had a significant difference on speed.

Sergei had a similar contract to Mondo in that he got a huge bonus every time he set a new record. So he routinely broke it by a quarter of an inch even when he could vault much higher.

If you saw Mondo's record, you can see that he could go a half foot higher if he needed to. He doesn't even miss at most heights.
