If PR had 12 Jose’s they would’ve won by 35

5 undersized point guards would make for some terrible rim protection

Why does Puerto Rico get to compete in the Olympics as their own country?

Well, they are a country and qualified.

You sure about that? Last I heard they were a US territory. When did they become a country?

OK, let's split the difference, it's a Commonwealth. I grew up there, people feel linked to the US but constitutionally and culturally distinct.

Interesting distinction. I see on the internet that it is a Commonwealth, but it is also a US territory: "Puerto Rico, officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a Caribbean island, Commonwealth, and unincorporated territory of the United States."
The difference is, you called it a country, which it is most definitely not. Anyway, that's awesome you grew up there. I spent some time there a few years ago, mostly in Vieques. Some amazing nature spots and beaches there. Mofongo!
Like the other posters, I guess we assumed the Olympics were only for actual countries to compete, which is why we were confused about Puerto Rico in there. But the Bahamas was also in the qualifer rounds for basketball, and they're also not a country. So I guess they allow commonwealths and territories to compete in the Olympics, too.

Raised near Aguadilla, the island has always loved basketball and has a long history in International play. It's not nearly as popular as baseball but has had several players who have played in the NBA.
