GRIME - Metroidvania Souls-like

Steam

Recently started playing Grime (about 16h in) and I'm really enjoying it. The art and music are great, the platforming and combat are very challenging without being overly frustrating, and the death mechanic is significantly more forgiving than Souls games. Curious if anyone else has picked it up, as I'd never heard of it before a youtuber I follow did a few run throughs. Random, boss free/spoiler free screenshot from google, which limits the atmosphere a bit, but still gives an idea of the vibe:

Bought it a while back and have been waiting on all the expansions and DLC and shite to finish dropping. Think that it’s complete now so I plan on starting soon. Never heard a bad thing about it

Yep, fully DLC’d, updated, and patched, which added some rebalancing, multiple new areas, and a fully fleshed out NG+.

And if/when anyone picks it up, feel free to ask if you want any info. If you're generally familiar with Souls-likes, most of the systems (weapon skill reqs, scaling, etc) should make sense, but there are a few things that are a bit more unique.

I've never played it, but I just spent a few minutes looking at the Steam page. Art and graphics look a bit more modern with Grime, Grime looks much heavier on platforming (think Ori), Bloodstained looks a bit heavier on story narrative (there very much is a narrative in Grime, but it's more Souls-like in that it's understated unless you go digging), and the combat actually looks very similar from a mechanics perspective.

I would say it's probably worth a shot at $25 retail, but it routinely goes on sale for $15 or so, and I would say it's definitely worth a shot at that price.

Picked it up and started playing. It is “ok”, IMO.

I like the setting.

The combat and controls just feel sluggish is my biggest complaint.

It is worth the sale price.

I’m not sure it would be worth the full $25.

It feels like a more sluggish, less polished Hollow Knight.

Sluggish is an interesting description. I never really felt that. Then again, I’m running a resonance/parry build, so I wouldn’t really feel any issues with frequently using heavier weapons. Combat speed reminds me a lot of Dark Souls 1. Faster than 2, more deliberate than 3.

beat the demo. game definitely grew on me, as i became stronger. beating the amalgram was fun.

will wait for a sale.

It's definitely a slow burn. The first area of the game is more tutorial than anything. The environment is simple, platforming is simple, enemies are simple, bosses are simple. All of them get much more complex and interesting as the game goes on.

To make another Dark Souls 1 reference, I would say the start up to Amalgam is the rough equivalent of the Asylum.

And for the record, I don't think anyone should pay full price for damned near anything, much less a game that's three years old. Get that bitch on sale

i see a lot of potential.

the early "clunkiness" i was experiencing was due to running out of Force, and not being able to cancel long attack animations. Once i figured that out and developed a rhythm, things became way easier.

Rhythm is extremely important to combat in Grime. Also, even if you aren't going to do a full blown parry build (much fun, highly suggest), don't sleep on absorbing enemies. It uses no stamina and absorbing enemies allows you to discover "traits" that you can buy into as the game progresses, which can be very powerful.

Absorbing is highly satisfying for sure. Can you absord any prey? I was only able to absorb things with hands.

You can absorb any red health bar segment. If the health bar is gray, you can repel, but not absorb. Some enemies are all gray, some have gray segments you have to clear before you hit the red segments.

Initially, repelling blocks the attacks and stuns the enemy. There’s a trait that allows you to also inflict damage on repel based on your resonance level. I’m obviously spec’d into those kinds of traits.
