We all know Hurt by Cash but this is a pretty wild version of the Carpenters. Jim Hensen what were you thinking?

Rolf Harris' wobble version of Stairway

Keeping with the Zeppelin theme - Dread Zeppelin Your Time is Gonna Come (and Robert Plant himself has said he likes this version better than Zeppelin's)

Jimi Hendrix electrified Dylan's acoustic/folk All Along the Watchtower.
Joe Cocker always added a bluesy rendition of covers.

Siouxsie covered a ton of famous songs; some of which I didn't realize weren't hers until much later on.

The Passenger was my favorite and I had no idea until years later that was Iggy Pop.

Most "wow" to me (and a great cover, nonetheless) is Jane's Addiction's version of "Ripple" by the Grateful Dead.

Yep.

I'll also add Judas Priest's cover "Diamonds & Rust" and "Green Manalishi," Wilson Pickett's version of "Hey Jude," Carlos Santana's interpretation of "Black Magic Woman," Steppenwolf adaptation of "The Pusher," and The Lemonheads rendition of "Mrs. Robinson."

Siouxsie's cover is better than the original.

Nina Hagen's cover of The Tube's "White Punks on Dope" is pretty cool, too.

that’s the first one I think of among “best covers ever”…the bangles were so good (and good to look at).

however, as far as covers that changed/surpassed/replaced the original…this is the GOAT

Crazy hilarious cover of The Cure- Just Like Heaven that is in perfect Dinosaur Jr. fashion
(Screams)
“YOU! Soft and Only
YOU! Lost and Lonely
YOU!! Strange as Angels”

Fun Fact- Robert Smith has said this is his favorite cover.
