Delta has turned this into a giant shite show, updating this thread for helping the Delta passengers stuck in this mess. Feel free to post if you're on other airlines, but you should be good.

General rules of thumb-

Flexibility- Are you able to leave out of any nearby airport? Can you fly into a different airport? Can you take a 6am or 730pm flight and overnight in a connecting airport to catch an early morning flight the following morning? Having flexibility matters

Airlines- If you're booked on delta and can't get out for 3 days, can you find another airline like spirit or frontier to get you where you need to get to?

# of bookings- How many people are in your booking? Can you split up 3 people and fly 1/2 on different routings so at least someone makes it home?

Calling the airlines/using the app- I generally have better luck rebooking on the apps, but that's assuming they're functioning. United, southwest, and deltas apps are at least functional, I'm not a fan of Americans. Try the app first then attempt calling if you can't find anything.

Delta

A disruption caused by a Global IT Outage on July 19, 2024 affected our operation systemwide. A travel waiver, which offers customers the ability to make a one-time change to their itinerary, is in effect. The fare difference for customers will be waived when rebooked travel occurs on or before July 27, in the same cabin of service as originally booked. Check flight status frequently for up-to-the-minute information about your flight plans, or get updates sent directly to your mobile device or by email with On-Time Flight Notification.

All DL Flights

Impacted travel dates- July 19 - July 22, 2024

Future Travel Rebooking Options:

When rebooked travel occurs on or before July 27, 2024 in the same cabin of service as originally booked, the fare difference will be waived.

A fare difference may apply when the waiver is class to class restrictive and the original booking class is not maintained in the rebooked itinerary.

When rebooked travel occurs after July 27, 2024, a difference in fare may apply.

If travel is not able to be rescheduled within these guidelines, customers may cancel their reservation and apply any unused value of the ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket for a period of one year from the original ticket issuance. Applicable fare difference may apply for new travel dates. Final travel must be completed by end of ticket validity.

*When rescheduled travel occurs beyond July 27, 2024, the change fee will be waived. However, a difference in fare may apply. Final travel must be completed by end of ticket validity, one year from date of original issue. If travel is not able to be rescheduled within these guidelines, customers may cancel their reservation and apply any unused value of the ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket for a period of one year from the original ticket issuance. Applicable change fee and fare difference will apply for new travel dates. Final travel must be completed by end of ticket validity.

Conditions and Restrictions

Eligibility only for customers with an Original Ticket Issue Date on or before July 21, 2024. Changes to origins and destinations may result in an increase in fare. Any difference in fare between your original ticket and the new ticket will be collected at the time of booking.

Cuse, wife and I are leaving for our honeymoon to Hawaii Monday morning on United. What would you recommend I do at this point?

Flying direct or connecting? If connecting, how long is the layover and what airport?

We connect in LAX with a 5 hour layover (going to get out and get lunch/ see the beach etc.) Really hoping our plans can stay in tact and we get there on time.
ETA.
IAH - LAX

LAX-LIH

Updated the OP with United's waiver, but it's only for today and tomorrow.

That should be plenty. Most flights today that went off had a 2 to 5 hour delay. I'd expect this to be fixed by tomorrow or Sunday with near functional schedules by sunday afternoon/monday so you should be good. Anything can happen though, it's good to be prepped with a backup plan

LAX-LIH is Y0 so likely sold out/oversold. Doubt you give up your seats on a honeymoon though

As a person in cyber OT/ICS security.

The airlines will have everything squared away by Monday. This is a business for them.

I posted earlier on the OT. Looks like my parents and daughter will leave LFT tomorrow bound for ATL. From there they are rebooked for Sunday evening. Only thing going for them is that they leave LFT at 6:45 am and land in Atlanta early in the day. They’ll have all day to try to get to upstate NY a little earlier than 11 pm Sunday evening.

Also thanks cuse for your extensive knowledge of air travel.

Also interesting info from delta on their press release was no unaccompanied minors under 18 allowed until Monday. Unfortunately my daughter is on her own reservation but NOT using unaccompanied designated ticket and no services. She’s 15 though with an ID. Hopefully she’s permitted. Rep on the phone said she would be, but info from delta has been murky.

Two seats on DL 2901 from ATL- MSP
07/20/24 12:15 PM
07/20/24 1:57 PM

then 4 seats open on DL 1286 connecting to MSP-BUF

07/20/24 3:24 PM
07/20/24 6:29 PM

Might be worth trying for this. Keep the LFT-ATL

If you keep checking obsessively, you'll find something before sunday night i'd expect especially if other people misconnect.

She'll be accepted per Delta's webpage

quote:

The minimum age for children to travel alone as adults paying adult fares varies: Kids have to be 12 years old to fly alone on domestic flights with Hawaiian, Southwest, Air Canada, and WestJet; 13 years old on Alaska; 14 years old to fly as an adult on JetBlue; and 15 years old on Allegiant, American, Delta, Frontier

You’re awesome. I’m looking at Rochester, Cleveland and Syracuse as well. They’re a group of 4. Definitely keeping the LFT to ATL though.

Have you ever looked at expertflyer before? It shows airline inventory in the moment. I think they offer a free 7 day trial. Expert flyer

It's what I use to obsessively look at airline inventory when I'm flying or for events like this

quote:

They’re a group of 4

That's going to be tough on a day like tomorrow/Sunday. May need to split into 2/2 if you want to get there, that's the flexibility i was mentioning in the OP. Otherwise they get to enjoy a day in Atlanta tomorrow and Sunday. Go to the aquarium, braves game if they're home, Coke museum, etc

Nope! I’m in the Google. Worth a trial. I’m sure I’ll be on it all day. I really love that I have 3 seperate reservations to try to change at one time.

Feels like it's not that bad

Would they do pittsburgh and drive from pitt? 4 seats on DL 1363 leaving at 10:38am tomorrow morning from ATL. Arrives in Pitt at 12:15pm. 3.5 hr drive

That flight is Y9 right now, tons of seats. Let me make sure it's not super delayed or cancelled. Flight looks like it's on time tomorrow, i would aim for pittsburgh. That drive is super easy as well, will get them at least close tomorrow then they can drive in the afternoon. This is the link to the flight I'd like to try to get them on. This is all under the assumption they leave Laffy at 6:45am and land at 9:33am. Gives them an hour and 5 minutes to connect

Flightaware for the pitt flight

11:08pm- Down to 4 seats already from 9. Absolutely crazy watching this inventory appear and disappear

11:11pm- Down to 2 seats

11:13pm- 1 seat

Geez!!! That’s crazy. I’ll have to wait until the am to book when I can at least get some feedback from the adults in charge of my teenager. I am sure Pittsburgh would have worked considering the alternatives. Hopefully spots open up tomorrow but obviously they’ll go fast though. Thank you again!

Tried to rebook on DL a couple times tonight and gave up. I'm riding Frontier tomorrow. Not thrilled but the price with checked bags and preferred seating wasn't bad. And it's direct.

This is one of the keys with events like this- take the nonstop. It limits any potential mess with connections, losing luggage, getting stuck in a city for a day or two, etc. Good luck today

I’d fly spirit if I had to this weekend. My parents, teen and grandmother departed LFT a little late but nevertheless this am. They had to claim bags and approach the counter and are rebooked for 2:45 into buf today. Way better than their initial 9:57 or so tomorrow night. Their atl to buf shows delayed but they all 4 have been ticketed. Hopefully it goes. ????

How did they get on that flight?? I wonder if delta has purposely set their flights to Y0 but letting agents in Atlanta rebook people onto those oversold flights? Do they have seat assignments? I'm questioning them actually being ticketed vs just being put on the standby list

Also the 245pm is delayed until 4pm at least
