That's a yellow/brown spotted hillbilly rock viper. Set the woods on fire before its too late!

Definitely looks like a hognose but everyone I’ve ever seen in La were black.

There’s an eastern, western, and southern species but all of them can have crazy colors or just be black/brown. Every one I’ve ever seen is dark brown to black.

Looks like some type of inbred version of a hog snake and his sister or mother. If you pick it up and it hisses "woo pig, soohie!" then it is definitely an inbred hog snake.
If it hisses and then rolls over and plays dead, it's a hognose.

I've seen hognose variations in color here in arkansas. Young are very colorful...mid adults are tan...older adults are black. All depends on age

Hognose…that lucky bastard.
I count only eight or ten that I have been fortunate to encounter in my 68 years and I haven't seen one in quite a while.
Far and away my favorite snake. I still spend quite a lot of time in the woods and I hope to see at least one more before the Lord takes me.

There used to be tons of them in Caddo Parish when I was a kid in the seventies. We'd keep them for a while to play with. Love when they'd cobra hood on ya.

Shape of head definitely looks like hognose but I haven't see one with the rest of the markings.
As the snake "experts" always insist on adding "best observed from a distance" to be safe.

Same here. Last one I saw was in Lincoln parish about 5 years ago. My dad called the Spreadin' Adders when we were kids.

Apparently they are all over the place in the pine forests northeast of Pensacola around Milton but I have never seen one. Hope to one day.

Thanks everyone, my guess was eastern hognose. i did the cobra bluff on him. said it was about 2 feet long and thick so maybe gravid female?
i did not know they were so hard to come by in the wild. i'll let him know how lucky he was to see it.

I have only seen two. One was the best pet snake I ever had until I figured out it simply would not eat anything I tried to feed it. The other was swimming from Tx. to La. across Toledo Bend.

Toads....they love toads. I have a huge pit full of water with hoards of toads around. I see hognose eating the toads all the time.
The adults eat the big toads laying eggs and the little hognoses eat the little toads as they come out of the water

Colors look like a hognose. But I dont see the turned up nose so leaning towards a water snake.
My very favorite snake to catch. Ive caught maybe a dozen or two over the years. They will hiss, strike with there mouths closed, throw up and flip over and play dead. Cool snakes.
Im old so if the nose is turned up a bit definitely a hognose, if not its not one
