Happy Tuesday y'all. Currently have a scheduled flight through Atlanta on Sunday landing at 230pm leaving at 335pm. Looking like a 50% chance of thunderstorms in Atlanta for Sunday so trying to make the determination of switching to connect in JFK with a 3 hour layover getting home an hr and a half later. Flights are going to be packed on Sunday given it's the Sunday after a holiday so have a feeling if I misconnect it'll be hours until the next available flight. Have already missed a connection once in Atlanta earlier this year due to circling for storms and that was with an hr 45 min connection.

So what would the travel board do-
1. Atlanta with 1 hour 4 min connection, thunderstorms, landing 530pm
2. JFK with 3 hour connection, no thunderstorms, landing 7pm

I'm leaning towards switching to JFK but am open to opinions

I would go through JFK especially if you have status and/or Priority Pass. Visit a lounge/take a nap in minute suites/get a massage for free and make the connection 100%.

Depends on how much you trust the forecast. Last Friday they showed a high chance of storms all day Saturday, and we ended up with about an hour of rain.

I don't really trust any forecast

I went ahead and switched to JFK, will update the thread on Sunday and let everyone know if I made the right decision

A one hour connection in Atlanta is sketchy on days where there is no weather. JFK all day.

This time of year its best to fly in the morning before thunderstorms develop and delays start to pile up.

Be warned that your target airport being clear doesn't necessarily mean you'll be clear. I got absolutely raked this week in and out of EWR because of storms in other areas of the NE flight corridor completely fricking the flight schedule.

The weather has messed up my travel plans twice this summer. I was stuck in Denver for 17 hours and Florida for 11.
I’m not a big fan of the Atlanta airport and in general I prefer a longer layover rather than a tight travel window.

I agree with this sentiment, but going out drinking on saturday night I'm not in the mood to wake up hungover bright and early sunday. I'm hoping midday is good enough to get out past any storms.

Well that's Newark for you . Yeah I get it, it looks like most of the storm fronts will be in the south or near GA on sunday not the northeast hence my interest in switching

Don’t overdo it. Enjoy some drinks but stay hydrated and know your limits.

The chance of Thunderstorms in ATL is 50% all summer, every day. Turbulence sucks even if there's not a storm. Lightning is going to be your biggest problem, because they won't run ground personnel to do anything on foot if there is lightning in the area. Not only is baggage not moving, but you sit waiting for a gate because there's no one permitted to guide you in.

LGA/EWR/JFK sucks, but Atlanta weather in the summer is reliably terrible in the afternoon in ways that may impact your transition. It doesn't sound like you're doing international, what about connecting in a DL craphole like CVG to split the risk?

I love connecting in CVG or RDU when given the chance since there's so many open gates/space, but not an option for my routing on Sunday

I was in that same mess with Newark, but I still blame United for most of the issues. In general I like Newark and fly through there even though it’s out of my way.

I've been delayed on departures to Atlanta because of storms at least 5 times. The thing is that the flight you are connecting to is very likely coming in late as well if they are holding arrivals. I think I made it every time, often the second flight is delayed even more than the first one. But it's still a PITA and I avoid ATL on summer afternoons.

On the way up there, getting diverted to Charlotte at 2am after being in a holding pattern for two hours because they didn't have the runway space was a ton of fricking fun

Just to follow up here-

The original 1 hr 4 minute connection through Atlanta would have been fine early afternoon today. Every flight was booked though from ATL- south florida until about 7:30pm so if I had missed the original flight the next available flight would've been 4 hours later. Airports were packed today with holiday travelers.

Connection through JFK went smoothly, even got in a half hour early (only an hour after the ATL flight). All in all, was able to relax during the 3 hour layover, get a quick massage, grab food, and charge my phone so it was a pretty decent layover.

Atlanta is getting hammered with thunderstorms this evening, glad I didn't book the last connection of the night.
