Fishing - Telluride / Durango Area

Heading to Durango and Telluride in a couple of weeks and planning to try to fish a day or two. Any recommendations for guides or areas? Better fishing the Durango area or Telluride area? Plan is to get a guide for a day and then fish on our own a few times. Thanks for input.

Duranglers may be a good place to start

Not trying to be a downer but everyone and their dog will be on the rivers in that area over the next week. I'd rely on the guide but trying to find a spot to yourself will be tough.

Thank you. We will be out there in two weeks. The plan to hire a guide for one day and then go on our own later in the week.

I will be watching this thread. Will be in telluride mid July as well. It’s gonna be crowded. Fishing around telluride has never been great in my experience. But I’ve always gone on my own.

Duranglers was somewhat helpful but provided inaccurate advice on local regs on what we could use (barbs etc), said differently, expect some mild judgement if not on a fly rod. I would also chat with Gardenswartz Sporting Goods right down the road - they had good advice on where I could pop in to the river for some success (lots of places around town).
Was fishing in-between kid activities so no guide advice unfortunately.

Went to Durango in 21. The uncle to the groom lives just west of Durango and told me to fish right behind Walmarks in town.

Drive an hour south from Durango and fish the San Juan below Navajo Dam. You won't regret it.

My Aunt and Uncle ran a campground in Creede, Co for years. He could take me up in the mountains, could catch trout all day. Beautiful area. That's where the Rio Grande River starts.
