Ron Howard, a director of ups and downs. What his peak in your opinion?

I took off early today and caught Apollo 13 on SyFy for the last half of the movie.
For me, incredible movie. Ron has made one great movie, some good ones, and a lot of trash that I’ve not bothered watching. He hit gold on this one.
Hanks, Paxton, Sinise, Bacon, Harris, and every “that guy” you can imagine, what a cast. Horner kills the score too. Then I got to thinking about all his bombs that I haven’t bothered watching
Apollo 13 has to be his absolute peak right?
Apollo 13 - absolutely great
Beautiful Mind - good but more of a Crowe showcase
Grinch - hate it
The missing - mid
Cinderella Man - maybe my 2nd favorite
Da Vinci Code trilogy - mid
Frost/Nixon - Oscar bait
Rush - good
Heart of the sea - one of those that’s good to catch on tv for the whale scenes but otherwise sucks
Solo - better than the shite they put out now
Hillbilly Elegy - awful
Thirteen Lives - good
“With all do respect sir, I believe this will be our finest hour”
“Gentlemen, it’s been a privilege flying with you”
Apollo 13 might just give me the most goosebumps out of any movie. He nailed it.

His career has been all downhill since Mr. McBeevee

He think his "bombs" are better most directors career achievements. He will not be considered Scorsese, Spielberg, or Coppola in any sense but he always made solid movies that are watchable. I think his earlier ones like Night Shift and Parenthood are really good. Most of his movies (pre-2010) were highly successful in the period they were made.
But to answer your question, his career peak is Apollo 13.

His Beatles movie - Eight Days a Week was pretty awful.

For me peak Ron Howard is '88-'96
Willow
Parenthood
Backdraft
Far and Away
Apollo 13
Ransom
The only "flop" in that span was The Paper which came out in '94

This is mostly true. But I’d rephrase the first sentence as “his bombs are better than a lot of other meddling directorr’s best movies. But he’ll never be one of the GOATs.”
He should be the low bar, and I mean that as no insult whatsoever.

it might not be one of his most artistic but I think "Splash" may be most enjoyable. right up there with 13

That car chase movie he did. I'll look it up later

His peak was the first half of his career - Night Shift to Appollo 13. Pretty much a string of hits and he became one of those guts that made you eagerly await his next release. Had a reputation as a guy who was very good at picking projects and managing all egos involved. Also benefited greatly from his partnership with Brian Grazer who gets a lot of the credit for his run.
He's never been in the discussion of legendary directors or anything, but if you were to devise a point system for ranking directors where you rated each movie on a scale of 1-10 and then added up the total "points" I think he would be higher on the list than most realize. He has like 10 great movies and another 10 decent, solid films along with a handful of duds. His point total would probably be somewhere between 160-180 and not many directors would top that.

Agree. Russell Crowe, Rene Zellwegger, Paul Giamatti were all great in that movie.
Oddly enough, Angelo Dundee was as animated as a cardboard cutout during the fight scenes where he played a Braddock cornerman-----a role he had in real life for decades with numerous champions in the real boxing world.

The Missing was not a "mid". It was great and very underrated.

Rush was decent but I didn't care for the cinematography. At all.
