Last bill was 3 x higher than first two of this year. I have been checking the meter for the last few days and also checking for leaks. The meter said I used 8,500 gallons of water in the last 24hrs. My irrigation system uses about 1,200 gallons a day, three times a week. What gives?

Why are you watering that much? We’ve gotten good rains spaced out this summer.

1200 gallons aint that much....10 gallons per minute = about 2 hours of watering.
I use way more than that.

Grass and shrubs....1 acre lot with house.
Last year drought made me pay attention to the flow rate, so I measured.
1000 gallons goes quick.

I do too.

0.5” of water on 1/4 acre lawn is almost 3,400 gallons.

Engineering basis of design is 120 gallons per day per person. Assuming 4 people in the home you are around 500 gallons per day. You either have a big leak somewhere or you are significantly overwatering your lawn.
