Apps like Life 360, Gas Buddy, & MyRadar sell your driving data to insurance companies

Yep, those (and other apps) are collecting your driving data and selling it to your insurance company who use the data to help determine your rates. This is an effort to get around people not wanting to opt into the driving monitoring hardware that insurance companies want people to use.

For the last two decades, auto insurers have been trying to get people to enroll in programs, commonly called usage-based insurance plans, that monitor their day-to-day driving so rates better reflect the actual risk. But privacy-minded consumers have been reluctant to sign up.
So the industry has taken a different tack, getting data about how people drive from automakers or from apps that drivers already have on their phones. Experts say most people have no idea the insurance industry can track them this way.

According to the companies collecting and selling the data, consumers agree to share their information with the insurance industry. But the murky consent process means people may not realize what they are opting into.

The smartphone apps collecting driver data may not be obvious at first glance. One, Life360, is used by parents to keep track of their children. MyRadar offers weather forecasts. GasBuddy helps people save on fuel costs.

Big tech already has all your data regardless of you using those apps.

Another reminder that Uncle Ted was right.

It's an invasion of privacy, but I have the driving habits of a 70 year old, so I do have one of the deals in my truck.
It saves us a pretty decent amount on our insurance. Last 6 months it was around $1500 for 3 vehicles. Granted, I have a teen driver so our insurance is high as shite.

Opting into it is one thing. A radar app (or any app) burying it in their terms of service and selling it to your insurance company is another.

Is this a thread where the same people who bitch about someone drying 75 in the left lane say shite like this?

They’re aggregating data for all users in an area. So even if you drive like an old woman (like I do), this is still impacting you.
I guess it’s no different from them using aggregated accident data for an area, but it feels underhanded because that’s not what you sign up for (you think anyway) when you get an app like Life360.

Is this supposed to be news? There's a reason insurance is so expensive in NOLA proper compared to Metairie for example.

These apps don’t know if you’re driving or a passenger.

That location/GPS data from your weather app was being used to set your auto insurance rates?
It’s not exactly surprising but I don’t think most people would have assumed that this specifically was happening. Maybe I just don’t read a lot of news.

Because there's no way a NYT article could ever be sent to someone via email

If you believe that's how your rates are set, more power to you I guess.

I live in the state with the highest average car insurance, I’m not bitching about it.

I give mine to them voluntarily for lower rates.
You're info is sold so many times anyway, might as well save some money from it.
