Turks and Caicos backtracks on ammunition law that landed American tourists behind bars

How f'ing hard is it NOT to take spare ammo with you on vaca? I've traveled all over the world, visited dozens of countries and never one even came close to having accounted for ammo in my personal luggage. It's just basic common sense to got through every pocket, etc., before going through any type of inspection checkpoint, even when traveling CONUS.

Last time I was at DFW there was a guy that appeared to be from a small town and likely an avid hunter. They pulled a loaded magazine out of his carry on. Thankfully he made that mistake in America. Otherwise he could wind up like Griner (expect without the leverage of the media).

The average person is stupid. Millions of people fly every day. Not hard to do the math on this one.
That being said you have to look at intent on stuff like this. A guy who forgets to empty all of the shell casings out of his duffle bag after that trip to the gun range six months ago is not a threat to your national security. Make him pay a "stupidity fine" and re-book a plane ticket and then send him on his way.

I think the issue is they are making it through US screening and getting caught during the screening in Turks and Caicos.
There's no bigger redneck or hunter than me and I've never even come close to making such a mistake.

As expected when we discussed this originally.
American interests 100% had the power to make T&C yield on this issue and that was done, and it looks like it was done in a somewhat face-saving way (T&C amending the law to allow for more discretion which should ultimately get these guys out and back home on time served/fine).
Stupid/reckless or not, there was obviously no ill will. And while we can say what we want about the autonomy of other countries, if you're small and dependent on our money, you're subject to our influence. Just how it is.

It's also basic common sense not to arrest someone for a loose bullet or shell in their luggage that is clearly not a threat.

Easy to forget loose ammo in a bag, definitely not intentional. My kid nearly got in trouble driving my truck to school after they searched it because it had a dip can, 30-30 and 270 shells, as well as a epi pen that had all been in vehicle for years.

Maybe I’m just an idiot, but what kind of national security threat are shells or shell casings if there are no guns present?

If not mistaken they were found as the perps were leaving the country? If so then it means they had no ill will intent.

I have a range bag. I do not use it for vacations.
I dont understand how this happens.

It happens. The wife got a large folding knife on a plane with live ammo. Made it there and back without anyone finding it.
I found it when I emptied the backpack.

Combine avid shooter with a non frequent flyer and shite happens. No issues holding them responsible but within reason

In a fricking suitcase? No.

Man you are just perfect. People make mistakes. Everyone except you can agree that the punishment was much too severe for the "crime".

I’ve traveled all across the country with a small brick of 22 ammo tucked down in a small side pocket. Shocked the heck out of me when I found it. No one ever noticed I guess.
I’ve accidentally had a pocket knife in my bag several times. Security in Little Rock has always been cool about it. Once I was cutting it close on a flight and they mailed it to me so I wouldn’t have to run back to my truck.

Negative, it's very easy to ensure your luggage is free of potentially prohibited items.
Vehicles are another matter altogether, but we're discussing luggage that will go into another country in this thread. If you do cross into Canada or Mexico in your POV (i've done both) take extra time to go through every hidden space in your vehicle. At various times, my kids have driven my truck to school, it's full of ammo, weapons and other items that are prohibited from school grounds. If they had gotten caught there would not have been dire consequences, getting caught in another country is another matter.

Dude, you can't make mistakes when it comes to international travel, double, triple and quadruple check your, and your families, luggage, personal items and carry ones. It's really not hard at all.
