Gov. Jeff Landry sided with trial lawyers over business interests Tuesday in a high-stakes legal and political battle in Baton Rouge over how much people who sue can collect in injury and damage claims.

Landry vetoed House Bill 423, a bill that would have reduced payouts to the injured. Conservative “tort reform” champions expected his move, they said, because of the large campaign contributions the governor received from trial attorneys during last year’s election campaign. Trial lawyers have traditionally been big donors to Democrats, including Gov. John Bel Edwards.

quote:

Landry went to great lengths Tuesday to say that he vetoed HB 423 to ensure that working people and consumers would receive what they deserve in medical costs following an accident caused by others. Standing by his side was a Shreveport woman who said the existing law enabled her and her two daughters to collect a fair payout after being badly injured by an 18-wheel truck whose brakes failed.

Landry added that the veto had nothing to do with the trial lawyers’ campaign contributions, which, he said, accounted for only 7% of his overall donations.

Lawyers are the scum of the earth. Some are decent people, but they are the extreme minority.

It’s sad Landry is the Republican to take office. We had better conservative options but….: Louisiana gonna Louisiana.

none of the people in gov/politics are fiscally conservative, regardless of what they call themselves.

That is very true, but lawyers are enablers and are actively pushing for people to be shitty to one another in order to enrich themselves.

Or maybe he's right, and LABI and the Insurance companies are FOS.

All that tort reform passed a few years ago; how's that looking for your insurance premiums lately? Hook, line and sinker...

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Why would the labi shill for something that wouldn’t help the business community at large? If you don’t think insurance costs are hurting commerce in this state I don’t know what to tell you.

Do you think the insurance companies are just meanies and want to overcharge the fine people of this state?

Are you gullible enough to think they aren't?

I can live with this. I think we could make a lot of headway getting rid of a system where insurance pays off because it is cheaper. For instance, if you sue me for a slip and fall and it is proven to be bogus you the plaintiff gets stuck with all the costs.

The voters of this state just need to not vote for lawyers of any type until trial lawyers are no longer a thing.

Nelson - voted No on overriding JBE vetoes, supports abortion, wanted to increase tort action from 1 year to 2 years on car accidents, offered Back on Track program to release prisoners early,

Everyone needs to watch this to better understand why Landry vetoed the bill.

Translation: they should continue getting free money above what was actually paid to the doctors or what they’d actually have to reimburse their health insurance, said free money coming out of all of our pockets by way of premiums.
