UPDATE

I just talked to our friends—the houses around theirs were destroyed, but theirs is okay. Only a few days before the fire, they had the tall, dead grass in their lot removed, which may have saved their house. Also, their horse was moved to safety before the racetrack was threatened.

We were planning to spend a couple of weeks with them in August. They are heartbroken. They still don't know the status of their quarterhorse stabled at Ruidoso Downs.

That's a bad one, man. It blew up in the worst spot for those folks.

The livestream cam from town yesterday was pretty damn scary.

Two raging wildfires in New Mexico that prompted the evacuation of thousands of residents in the tourist town of Ruidoso have also led to the relocation of horses from Ruidoso Downs, located about five miles southeast of town.

The racetrack of Ruidoso Downs, located in the Ruidoso suburb of the same name, hosts both Thoroughbred and higher-level Quarter Horse racing, notably the All American Futurity (G1), the world's richest Quarter Horse race.

Ismael "Izzy" Trejo, executive director of the New Mexico Racing Commission, said at 10 a.m. MT June 18 NMRC state veterinarian Dr. Victoria Lowe informed him that "horses are being requested to vacate the Ruidoso grounds."

Earlier in the morning, he had said that tracks and a couple of fairgrounds in the state have "really offered to step up and help" by offering to stable horses leaving Ruidoso.

Citing a conversation he had with trainer Jose A. Gonzalez, Trejo said about 190 horses left Ruidoso the evening of June 17, and "I'm told today the State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque is preparing the facility for the potential intake of hundreds and hundreds of horses."

What caused this spontaneous combustion? Those fires out west seem to pop up for no good reason. I'm thinking broken glass in grass on the side of the road causes it. What else could it be? Or does the sun heat up the earth to combustion temperature?

If you're a betting man, and you want to bet on the cause of a wildfire always put your money on "Human Caused". If you want to put a side bet on it being arson, that's not bad either, you'd win more than you'd imagine.

Doesn't take much when conditions are really dry.

Even in Louisiana we had a few fires on the side of the interstate during last summer's drought. They traced those fires to cigarettes being flicked out of vehicles and I think one was attributed to sparks caused by a trailer's chain dragging on the concrete.

The Tiger Island fire, the largest in state history, was ruled arson. Not "human caused", but arson. I haven't seen if any arrests were ever made.

If my house burned down, everything is replaceable. But I guess I just have a lot of junk in my house. I understand their despair.

Unlikely in Ruidoso....grass is scarce, What there is apt to be dry though so it could be. Probably lightning or even wind blowing shite around, creating a spark and you have a fire. Its a beautiful part of the world but it is drrrrryyyyyy
