Really think about Les Miles. And how amazing LSU won despite him.

This Les lawsuit has me reminiscing about his tenure.
He really really was a poor poor coach.
Yet despite him at the helm the talent won him a NC.
I have spoke to a quite a few of his former players and I ask them all the time about their recruitment by him.
They say he spoke and was exactly as he put forth in the media- aloof and disconnected.
I follow up and ask, “yet, you still chose to play for him?”
Most answer, “I wanted to be a Tiger.”
The guy was a product of nothing more than the LA home talent wanting to stay home despite the person at the helm being a bumbling idiot.
The guy made generational money for his family literally being a moron.
America.

He was a clueless head coach who fell into the perfect situation.
And still managed to screw it up.

This is why Brian Kelly has to be a winner.

Downvoters, please list what Les was good at.
Coaching what exactly?
Scheming?
Coaching a specific position group of specialty?

Remember when everyone used to think “damn, why doesn’t LSU ever have good quarterback play?” and then they fired Les… then LSU proceeds to have TWO Heisman winners at the position for the next two coaches’ tenures? Yea that was fun.

Miles was just old school and tough hard nosed football still won him games because LSU generally dominated in the trenches
His refusal to adapt to the modern college game was what frustrated fans more then anything
Saban style was actually very similar until he saw the times and how the rules changed and he adapted by changing his offense completely
O was a bigger moron then Miles but caught lightning in a bottle until he forgot how to manage a roster

that's no big deal, it's probably a bit demeaning as a 60-ish year old coach to have to go around sucking up to some clueless 17-18 year old, big time college athletics is a bidness, and it was back then too

I think sports gets too complicated at times. Les miles 2011 team, might have been best pure football team, hat for hat, lsu ever had.. until 2019. And orgeron put that team together. 2 guys that are called buffoons. Both are likeable characters, that people gravitated towards. Both could recruit well... and struggled when their coordinator well went dry.
Les had lot of coaching flaws, but end of the day he was a good overall coach for lsu, got us a title, and without Jefferson deer in headlights look all night, might have gotten a 2nd one. He refused to move on from cam Cameron and got stuck in offensive black hole...before all this other stuff, that was his biggest flaw.

Les was good at:
1. time clock mismanagement.
2. calling stupid plays (some worked. some did not.)
3. eating grass
4. chasing females not named Kathy Miles.
He definitely won games and the NC in spite of his coaching abilities.

quote:from 2005-2012 he was a top 5 HC. He just happen to coach in the same era as the GOAT Nick Saban and refuse to adapt past 2013 He has probably two more titles if Nick stays in the NFL.
He really really was a poor poor coach.

Les did some things well and other things not so well. He won a championship and has millions in the bank. Not too bad for a moron.
No one actually believes this
Also, why so much spacing in your post?

I think the truth with Les Miles is somewhere in the middle. He deserves more credit than his detractors want to give. He did bring us to two national championship games in 5 years. And he won the division 3 times in 7 years. Those are huge accomplishments and should not be diminished.
At the same time, many people have a distorted memory of the Miles years for some reason. He somehow set the “standard” of winning at least 10 regular season games every year, despite only actually accomplishing it 50% of the time (usually with a garbage OOC schedule). In reality, the only years we won 10 regular season games with a good OOC opponent were, ironically, 2007 and 2011.

Since his firing, a lot has come to light.
Dude was an idiot who fell into the right situation.

2005-2008 he was a different type of coach. He was known as a gambler and ESPN referred to him that way quite a bit.
UF/LSU in 07 was an epic game that everyone remembers. Beating Auburn, Alabama, GA, Ohio State, There were some awesome memories from his early years at LSU.
He changed and became risk averse and was still able to win at a high level with a 70s era offense and great defense for the most part.
The wheels started to come post 2011 and he couldn’t sustain it. I try to remember the 07 and 11 teams (except the championship game)

Miles was a decent recruiter and motivator which was good enough at LSU to beat 80% of the teams on his schedule at the time by just running the ball up the gut, but never got the most out of his players.
Other than recruiting, he was always a bum strategic and gameday coach who lucked into the most perfect situation with a championship roster already in place and the largest budget for assistants. Add the fact that there has never been a coach before or since where so many balls bounced the right way despite some very questionable decisions, but his luck regressed to the mean in his waning years.
Saban routinely played Les like a fiddle despite similar talent on the field every November.

The Jarrett Lee interception fest of 08 is the time you are looking for as to when the wheels came off for Les and his gambling mindset.

He was a protoypical CEO head coach. We knew it when he was here. He was dependent on his assistants for on field success. He could recruit the living room like nobody's business. Boiling it down to instate kids "wanting to be a Tiger" is disingenuous or ignorance. He played a major role in procuring the talent we had in his era. He was a master motivator as well. That can be huge in a locker room. He builds a culture well. Not without warts but overall pretty impressive. Point is, you aren't as successful as he was here for as long as he was by not being good. Plenty of "smarter" coaches would die for his career.

Some seriously dumb takes in here.
It's not easy to win in college football.
Les Miles record speaks for itself.
Was he perfect? Absolutely not.
Is anyone?
"Well he won because it was LSU." This might be the dumbest of takes. LSU had some dark times. Not everyone will win here.
99% of coaches would give their left nut to have Miles' list of accomplishments.
