The 70s were absolutely the golden age of facial hair in MLB.

Gary Carter.
DAMN.
You don’t hear about guys named Gary much anymore, or Leroy.

You've also got Yeager with the Dodgers.
edit: sorry, you listed Simmons with the Cardinals.
I don't when it started, but there was a transition where offensive catchers were moved to first basemen leaving defensive catchers batting .250

And those great catchers CALLED the game, not a dugout dude - manager.

Fisk
The correct answer to the question is yes but MLB has got some pretty good catchers right now. Baltimore's 2nd best prospect is being blocked by Adley.
You also had some crossover into 3+ years of the 80s with Fisk, Carter, Simmons, Santiago, Scioscia, and Steinbach. Tony Pena was pretty good too. After that it seems like there's less than a handful at any given time (ex. Alomar/Posada/I-Rod).
Now it's just a position of hitting buttons on your arm, a lot of ridiculous framing attempts, and how fast you can get the ball to 2nd. And then hitting. I think Adley is the one current exception to that standard.

Johnny Bench was the best. He was a Hall of Famer for sure his first year in the big leagues-- 1968.

Those are all great examples but Hundley for defense, Freehan for all-around play and McCarver for longevity have to be mentioned.

Johnny Bench was the best.

Good list.
I think Bob Boone was top 10 in 70's and 80's. And Jim Sundberg. 13 gold gloves between these two.

For those interested, Jon Paul Morosi is doing a podcast series “Road to Cooperstown” where he interviews Hall of Famers. The first episode is out and is with Johnny Bench. I enjoyed it.
