Beginning his career in 1979, Tim Raines plays his last season as a Florida Marlin in 2002. Raines and Julio Franco were the only players allowed to wear the flap-less helmet since they debuted before 1983, the year MLB required ear protection.

They need to ban all the body armor these guys wear. That's all I got. But Tim Raines was awesome.

I know they were used to the old way, but man, I wouldn't stand in an MLB batters box with guys throwing 95+ without something covering my ear hole

This actually reminds me of something that has always bothered me. Guys have so much extra protection these days, but they don't want to cover the ear that faces away from the pitcher? What about when they are running the bases? Also, it seems every time a player is doing anything above a brisk jog, the helmet flies off.

Carl Yastrzemski homering in the 1975 World Series while wearing a regular baseball cap with an insert inside the cap.

why? How many ear flaps have been hit by a pitcher?? Almost 2500 mlb games a year, close to a million in game pitches a year— and I can’t think of a player getting hit in the ear flap once in the last 2.5 decades

I saw a dude in a Braves game a couple weeks ago take a pitch straight into that ear hole flap and he’d have been seriously injured or dead otherwise, so I’m all for it.

What was the exception for them?

They debuted in MLB before 1983. Anyone who had big league time before 1983 wasn’t required to make the switch. Anyone who debuted 1983 or later has had to wear an ear flap.

Last guy to bat without a helmet - easy to look it up but I won’t - was a catcher for Red Sox. He had same exception - had debuted before helmets were mandatory. He did wear the insert inside.

Bob Montgomery

I just watched Rafael Devers foul a ball off the plate into his unprotected ear.

Quite remarkable the amount of teammates he had. Played with Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt as a rookie, and Jose Reyes and Jeff Francoeur in his final season.

Remember when Barry Bonds was daily trying out for American Gladiators?

Or was he trying out for World's Biggest Pussy?

Absence of fear, just like in football rule changes, taints all records.

I remember going to see him a couple times when he did a short stint with the Memphis Chicks back at old Tim McCarver Stadium. Seems like a long time ago.
