Ozzy and Accept in Biloxi 40 years ago tonight

Some of you may remember that Ozzy got canceled in Baton Rouge twice in the early 80’s. First in 1982 just a couple of weeks before Randy Rhoads was killed. That show was canceled by the JA DA Ossie Brown. Two years later my buddy and I had front row tickets for Ozzy and Accept at the Centroplex for June 4th. Well, that one was canceled when some D bag Baptist minister named David Diamond raised a ruckus about it.
As angry as my buddy and I were about it, we turned lemons into lemonade when we said screw it, let’s go to Biloxi for the June 6th show. Got a little bit complicated when his dad would not let him take the car. So we had a buddy drop us off at the Greyhound station in Baton Rouge at about 4:30 AM. Had to ride down through New Orleans and then on to Biloxi. Had a room at the Holiday Inn right next to the Coast Coliseum.
We got checked in and headed straight over, where we were the first two there early in the day. Pretty sure we got there around noon and sat down at the doors. Of course when the doors opened came the always fun mad dash for the stage. We were right up front for the whole show. In addition to Ozzy being my favorite metal figure, Accept was my current favorite at the time. If you weren’t lucky enough to ever catch them live that’s a shame because they were amazing every single time I saw them.
My buddy and I definitely felt like it worked out for the better and we wound up happy for the cancellation in Baton Rouge because it was floor seating and Biloxi being general admission just made for a better atmosphere. Plus, it was still only a couple of years after the infamous AC/DC show at the Centroplex and with Ozzy being the headliner the cops would’ve been on high alert and probably very aggressive. Biloxi was a blast.
Great one in the memory banks.

So in 1982 I think it was part of the Satanic panic but also the AC/DC show was just a couple months earlier IIRC. There was almost no chance that shite was gonna happen. I still vividly to this day remember a headline in the Morning Advocate saying “Ossie vows Ozzy will not appear”.
1984 was kind of the Satanic panic shite. That dude was ridiculous. Never heard of him before that and never heard of him again afterward.
It’s funny. I often think about how terrified parents and teachers were of Ozzy back in the 80s when I was such a huge fan. I actually loved that. Fast forward a few decades and he was this lovable celebrity starring in his own reality show, and still a celebrity to this day. Makes the people in the 80s look quite stupid.

For us young folk who weren't around at the time what's the story with the Baton Rouge AC/DC show?

Packed people into the arena like sardines (it was oversold) people were sitting/passed out in the aisles and on the stairs. There were some overdoses, drugs were being sold on the floor and there was a napalm cloud of pot smoke, as there always was, hovering above the crowd. I think the BR Advocate sent a reporter there who wrote it up in the Monday paper. Politicians freaked out, people were shocked. Ended General Admission for the Centroplex for a while.
On a side note, it was a helluva concert!

Your description of this AC/DC show in Baton Rouge sounds exactly like every metal concert I went to in the late 80’s in Shreveport at the Hirsch Coliseum. They were amazing.

Those concerts were amazing! What an experience they were.
Drove up from BR in early 80’s to see Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Fastway together at the Hirsch Colosseum. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to!

I wasn’t at the show but read and heard that there was some destruction as well. In the bathrooms and maybe seat cushions? Could be false info but I remember hearing this.

Oh you know it. I had been a fan before that album and really loved a lot of the classics from Breaker and Restless & Wild (still do). Preferred those over Balls To The Wall but they played more from BTTW since they were on that tour, plus it was an opening set. Don’t get me wrong though, the BTTW songs were fantastic as well live.
When we saw them in ‘85 headlining at the Saenger in New Orleans we got to see them play a lot more of the older songs. Such a great live band.

Most probably was. I tended to stay out of the bathroom at those concerts, was like the seventh level of hell.

Nice! I actually saw them in Jacksonville about six years ago playing all Accept material. It was allegedly his last tour playing any Accept material. Hopefully that has changed but not sure.
And also btw, Accept is playing New Orleans in September as well. They’ll be opening for KK’s Priest so the setlist will be fairly limited. They’ll play at least a couple of old classics though. They’ve had this new singer for at least 14 years, Mark Tornillo, and he’s damn good. I just miss Accept with Udo upfront.
