Where can I find some decent cod fillets in the BTR area? I know nothing is truly fresh so I am not against frozen if they are good quality. I have never bought or cooked Cod in my life so not sure the best place to start. Sprouts? Fresh Market? Please share!

This is definitely a question I never thought I’d see on this board.

Feel free to suggest alternatives. I’m trying to eat more fish and learn to cook it. I want a Thai inspired coconut milk poached cod. I am willing to substitute another fish but Cod seems the best choice for this type of dish.

Super fresh cod is delicious. Frozen cod can be goodish. If you want to try cod for the first time hold out for the good stuff. Your best chance is probably whole foods.

Costco has it frozen regularly.

I believe it's one of those fish that are frozen at the processor.

I have used frozen cod from Albertsons to make wet batter fish and chips and it’s really good.

I’ve never had fresh cod so I don’t really know what I’m missing though.

I get it about once a month. Always great quality. No complaints

Fresh Market usually has it in their fresh fish case. Cannot attest to if it was previously frozen or not. Having had it right after I caught it in Alaska, it was pretty damn good, although our halibut guide was taken aback at the Coonasses wanting to keep them, they are pretty snobbish. I had it flash frozen at the dock and hauled it home and shared with the neighborhood. That and Pollack are tops for English style fish and chips.

Made the rounds to a few places today and didn’t have much luck. Trader Joe’s only had frozen breaded cod. Sprouts had some in the case but it didn’t look very good. It was a very thin filet. Fresh Market did not have any cod but they had some nice looking Chilean sea bass. You think that would work well? I’m just looking for something white and not fishy tasting.

If it is legit Chilean sea bass it should be good for your purpose, my wife cooks a lot of fish mostly sourced at Costco and sometimes TJ's.
