Offseason Transactions...

With the season winding down and the Saints out of the playoff Picture...I'd thought I'd do what every other saints fan is out there doing...looking ahead to the off season.
The Saints will finish with the #1 Offense in the NFL, so that side of the ball may look set for years to come...Well not really, Still need a LT, another Guard, an upgrade at the Center position and a short yardage runner.
But Something, and I mean something has got to be done on the defensive side of the ball. Vilma, Ellis are looking to be very good players as expected, but they need help.
Tracy Porter looks to be the only good player in the defensive secondary but his progress will be slowed by injury. Smith and Grant have been underachievers there whole careers basically except for one year for each.
That is plenty of holes to fill...
Here are a list of names in the free agent market this year that are intriguing to me for the Saints to express interest in...
LB
Bart Scott, 28 yrs old
LeRoy Hill 26
CB
Chris Gamble 26
Bryant McFadden 26
Dunta Robinson 26
S
Sean Jones, 26
Kerry Rhodes 26
If the Saints can land one of these guys or maybe even 2, then Add another starter in the draft...They could dramatically improve the defense IMO.

Landry from washington would be better. did you see the hit he put on the philly wr yesterday to end the game?

I am going to get slammed for this but Albert Haynesworth is the free agent that the Saints need to get. A solid front that takes up blockers will increase our defensive numbers dramatically.

Landry from Baltimore is a SS. We need a FS.

OJ Atogwe would be a steal

I'm 70% sure that the panthers extended gamble 3 weeks ago so you can take him off that list

The Saints incorporated more cover 2 looks this year which helped the corners tremendously. I'm okay with the corners, not great, but adequate. The Saints need another big back on O. And, on D, desparately need two safeties and two OLB. The neg to more zone coverages is that we need better coverage safeties. It would help to have at least one, but with the way NFL def are played, there really isn't a difference between a strong safety and a free. Both safeties in today's NFL have to cover and tackle. If not, they get exploited, ala Harper in the Chicago overtime game. No way he should be over the top help on Hester. Shanle is just terrible and Fajita is overrated by Saints fan. He's terrible too. Two new, agressive safeties with coverage skills would go a long way with this team. That would be No. 1 and another back to get the short yards, No. 2.

We do need a power back big time. On D we need a lot. Shanle and Fujita are both servicible. I wouldn't mind signing or drafting an outside linebacker, but our biggest concern has to be another CB, Safety, and DT.

FS is a bigger need, but I wouldn't mind replacing Harper

I don't get people mentioning fujita in these discussions. He seems pretty damn solid to me, his sideline to sideline play is great and he is an incredible athlete.
I've also seen interviews with the guy and he absolutely hates losing, we need more of that.
shanle, however, is another story. I think it would be great to get a speed lb to replace him that can blitz effectively. None of our lb's are great blitzers.

vilma has made it easy to blame things fujita by over showding every lb. hes a legit starter in this league imo

Mike Peterson- he will be a fa per sr, and can play olb per sr

Fujita should be the third best lb on any team. Unfortunately for us, two yrs ago he was the best and now he's the second best. To answer your ques, you remember Fujita making plays three years ago during the NFC championship run. Last year and this year, name one play, just one, where he agressively attacked the play and tackled a runner for a loss. It doesn't happen. The dude is adequate at best. I'm not saying its necessary, it just has to be if we want to get to an elite def.

Good stuff mentioned so far in this thread.
I lok back at this year and see Kicker as a major problem. If we have that position solidified we're in the playoffs. This has to be the most upside down single year of of K and P in Saints history (more sensitive than Lohmiller's year).
A couple of those early season games would have been W's instead of L's. The momentum would have been downhill then instead of uphill like it was.

I think Dunbar will replace Shanle and we will aggressively pursue a Safety or LB with our first round pick. Hopefully we can get one of the free agents above also.
