Contractors curious about an extension cord on the roof of a Michigan grocery store made a startling discovery: A 34-year-old woman was living inside the business sign, with enough space for a computer, printer and coffee maker, police said.
“She was homeless,” Officer Brennon Warren of the Midland Police Department said Thursday. “It’s a story that makes you scratch your head, just somebody living up in a sign.”
The woman, whose name was not released, told police she had a job elsewhere but had been living inside the Family Fare sign for roughly a year, Warren said. She was found April 23.
Midland, best known as the global home of Dow Inc., is 130 miles (209 kilometers) north of Detroit.
The Family Fare store is in a retail strip with a triangle-shaped sign at the top of the building. The sign structure, probably 5 feet (1.5 meter) wide and 8 feet (2.4 meters) high, has a door and is accessible from the roof, Warren said.
“There was some flooring that was laid down. A mini desk,” he said. “Her clothing. A Keurig coffee maker. A printer and a computer — things you’d have in your home.”
The woman was able to get electricity through a power cord plugged into an outlet on the roof, Warren said.
There was no sign of a ladder. Warren said it’s possible the woman made her way to the roof by climbing up elsewhere behind the store or other retail businesses.
“I honestly don’t know how she was getting up there. She didn’t indicate, either,” he said.

Update
A woman who was living inside a sign on the roof of a Michigan grocery store told police it was an “old safe spot” known to her family, though she didn’t explain why she chose to stay there for a year, according to video of the encounter.
The 34-year-old woman, whose name hasn’t been released, was very concerned about her possessions as police officers said she would have to immediately leave an attic-like space inside the Family Fare sign in Midland, 130 miles (209 kilometers) north of Detroit.
The Associated Press and other news media recently reported the April 23 discovery. Police body camera video was subsequently obtained by MLive.com under a public records request, and portions were posted online Tuesday.
Police were called to the store when contractors working on the roof followed an extension cord to the hideaway. The woman was inside when two officers asked her to open a small door on the back of the sign.
“Did somebody turn you on to this?” one said.
The woman said it was an “old safe spot” little known to most people in Midland but “not anymore.”
The woman had a coffee maker, computer, bedding and phone. Another officer said the makeshift housing was “impressive” and wondered how she had survived the winter.
“I know how to deal with that. I’ve been in Alaska,” the woman replied.
She asked for time to call her employer and get a truck to put her belongings in storage. But the officers said no, making clear that store staff would remove the possessions and return them to her.
The woman emerged in black clothing with ski goggles perched on her head. She said she was sensitive to sunlight.
She asked the officers how they got on the roof.
“Ladder,” one said. “We’re not a roof ninja.”

You'd think the store would secure the exact same sign after we were told in another thread that the exact same woman did this to the exact same store earlier this month...

can we at least get a pic of the set up inside the sign?

Had some homeless living on the roof of a dollar tree building we have in Baton Rouge awhile back. They had been coming and going from up there for awhile before someone alerted us to it and we had to go “evict” them. They were not pleased to go.

We had a similar story make the news locally, where an arbitrarily sane 35-45 y.o. woman spent the late fall and winter in an old lady’s 8’ x 10’ utility shed in her backyard. Practically the exact same circumstances, had a sleeping area with a mult-port charging dock for phone, tablet, and coffee station all powered by an interior/exterior extension cord plugged into an outlet on the back of the house. Come spring old lady starts getting out and about in her backyard and was like

Wonder where she took a dump? Bucket and bring it down when full? No way she makes a year there throwing shite and piss off the roof without someone noticing a piles of stank.

The bakery kept missing German chocolate cake.

Does she still have the Five Man Electric Band members in there with her?
