One prevailing theory is that it was really targeted murders by the local mafia.
"As they lay sleeping in their apartment above the Maggio grocery store, the killer cut the couple’s throats with a straight razor before bashing in their heads with an ax."
Seems a bit overkill for the mafia unless he was trying to make a point, but killing the wife like that just doesn't seem mafia style.

So, reading this
LINK /
It sure seems like he had something against grocer's. Maybe eliminating the local competition or?
Grocer's attacked or killed - 6
Grocer's wife's, mistress, or family attacked or killed while grocer was present and attacked - 4
Druggist - 1 (could be grocery owner as well?)
Randoms Females - 2 (could they have been home alone and related to a grocery somehow?)
That's a lot of grocery men related killings and attacks, way too many to be a coincidence to me.

Marcello was born in 1910, so it’s safe to say his criminal empire had yet to begin at the time of the Axeman.

need to find a string (or strings) of unsolved murders somewhere else on the planet that happened in the 25 years or so between what we call the Ripper Killings and the Axeman killings.
Just look in port towns along the Atlantic coast.
Or, perhaps, he IS a demon. And possesses men wherever he roams in order to do his dirty deeds...

He may have gotten a name wrong but that doesn't rule out mafia ties The mob was around NO long before Carlo Marcello. Charles Matranga was boss around that time.

They had an entire storyline about him in one of the American Horror Story seasons. It was one of the earlier ones before they got real deep into the gay shite.

In somewhat unrelated news, a guy fishing in Bayou St John apparently pulled up a head attached to a dumbbell this evening.
