Lincoln wanted to collect the tariffs that Andrew Jackson did not. War was the means to ensure it would get done and suppress resistance, both in the CSA and the North.
The bankers in the North were still big mad they weren't screwing over the South since 1830.
quote:
"My policy sought only to collect the Revenue (a 40 percent federal sales tax on imports to Southern States under the Morrill Tariff Act of 1861)." reads paragraph 5 of Lincoln's First Message to the U.S. Congress, penned July 4, 1861.

Stonewall Jackson taught black slave children Sunday school and how to read, write. This was taboo and against the law in the South.
That wasn't taught in the history books.

The Shenandoah Valley is one of the most beautiful parts of the South. I don't think it's particularly methy.

The most drug addled part of this country seceded from Virginia to join the Union, who ironically said secession was not legitimate. Try again Yankee.

Agree, and their vision was the one of the founding fathers. It is definitely not whatever it is that passes for our government now.

The mountain people have it rough. They’re still good people.

It shouldn't be called the Civil War as the South had no intention of overthrowing the federal government.
Right or wrong they wanted to leave and just didn't have the resources to do so.

Highly recommend as well as The South Was Right by the Kennedy brothers.
April 9, 1865 is a tragic, sad day as far as the founding principles of the constitution are concerned. The constitution by our founding fathers died that day.
The road to empire started that day. Lincoln along with the Yankee puritans started us on a path of power held by a bloated centralized federal government that is despotic at home and aggressive abroad.
