True. Everyone here has a gun and a dog.

See that's why I'm asking this because where I am, that would be the last thing to do. You'd get smoked just as fast as the traditional looters. I wouldn't really care who you were, you come into my yard at that point you may not be leaving. But if I was living in Shreveport, I'd expect exactly what you're talking about. That's exactly why people will eventually be leaving the urban centers. It's different everywhere. Some places have tactical advantages based on terrain, population, etc. Other places have inherent risks that can't be easily overcome.
I'm focusing on the Sheriff's department response because I think that's probably the only organization that could help maintain anything like order. The police forces are probably going home. What I'm picturing is the Sheriff's department becoming basically a local militia.

This is why I don't live around other people. We have a cabin and a travel trailer that are both completely off-grid, and some land in a few different states. I'd just disappear and check on things once in awhile to see if it was over.

No

We all have different needs, some kids, some medical conditions, some that on the surface that will look like good fits...but when the rubber hits the road just about every American is going to look out for number one.

Everyone tells these tall tales of living off the land, etc. And that may work if you are one of the ones that makes it till the end when population numbers have been reduced by huge percentages...without homesteading capabilities and the ability to protect it 24/7/365 for years and years, you will be toast.
so for me, whiskey and bullets.

I was thinking about that up here in the Shreveport Bossier area and it occurred to me that if Bossier Sheriff's Department closed the bridges across Red RIver, Shreveport couldn't bother us and would have to keep that crap over there in Caddo. And that got me thinking.
Do ya figure the Sheriff has thought about that?
Bossier Parish Sheriff - Operation Exodus
If a few residents began writing the Sheriff I'm sure he'd get this plan updated and maintain it

I have a whole home generator, so I’m good as long as gas is flowing. As for the rest, it’s no one’s business but my closest friends. Let’s just say they know where to go.

Looking at a map I see two federal interstate bridges. Please explain to me how a county sheriff is going to "shutdown" a federal highway.

Grab the armory, make my way to the coast, and work my way east and south down the Florida peninsula.

Warning lights, signs, and concrete barriers manned by armed deputies
Pretty easy

The only minor flaw is it gets to be like -40

Well holy crap they are thinking about it out loud. Good.
As to how do you shut down the interstates, you put up a barrier and park a Police car there. If that doesn't do it then you sandbag emplacements and put up physical barriers. Worst case scenario you blow the bridge but considering they shut them down every time it gets cold, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have to do that.
This is all hypothetical so we get to take leaps of logic like that.
As to the idea that there won't be any organizations anymore in a SHTF scenario, you're probably right for the first few days, but I'm telling you, they're talking to the people they trust in the community that they want in their Sheriff's Posse already. I know that for a fact in one county in another state. Just nothing out in the open. This is being discussed on the various retired special forces community social media sites. They are going to get together with other operators in their home counties and be part of the posse to help maintain order. And honestly, the sheriff's would be stupid not to use that kind of resource and set that up ahead of time.

open seas will be the best place to ride out a zombie apocalypse.
I told a young friend whose inner circle was exploring the meltdown possibilities that he should find likeminded and trustworthy people and buy old/cheap shrimp boats. Refit with water purification mechanisms and fill the hull with foam to ensure flotation in the event of long range gunfire and the pantry with nonperishables. Entertain business guest and family/friends as a perk (fishing, hunting, tourist experiences, etc.) and write it off. Forming a circle and anchoring in the middle of Lake Maurepas for 3 months after the power grid goes down would give one a survival edge, as many of the desperate heathen ("One Second After" version) would go away because of bad water and mortal combat/deprivation in a few weeks. If I were young, I would do this and enjoy the boat regardless of any speculative nightmare scenarios, just like any houseboat. The Marsh would be a good alternative as well, nws the storm dynamic.
Crazy stuff. But it makes a normal/mundane life more exciting.

Anyone paying attention can see the writing on the wall should be preparing and not just buying a few AR15s

I've been sailing for over 40 years. If it got that bad, I could sail away if I could get down there. Don't have to worry about gas in a sailboat and if I want to go to another continent, I could. That's always been on the table. But as I get older I'm realizing I'll probably have to ride it out right here and that got me thinking about this subject more specifically.
Every area is different. The one I'm in I think would weather it.
