I’m talking about 2+ ball dominant Superstars teaming up on one team

KD/Irving/Harden = nothing
KD/Beal/Booker = nothing
Dame/Giannis = nothing, granted Giannis is hurt but this is outlier due to injury. They weren’t gonna win title regardless
George/Harden/Kawhi=bout to get beat
Embiid/Harden=nothing
Lebron/AD Mickey Mouse title=nothing of substance

One of the takeaways could be that KD and Harden are cancers, Warriors would’ve won those without KD btw

Im glad these owners are eating shite, especially Ishbia, for thinking they can buy a title by putting as many max guys together as possible regardless of chemistry

The NBA is effectively going back to a Superstar with a Star as a sidekick and good role players to win titles. Big 3 Celtics and Big 3 Heat style are gone with the wind.

I’d put the below teams with a Superstar and Star with good role players in this category as Title contenders and it’s because their superstars and stars are true team players

Nuggets-Jokic (superstar), Murray (star)
Wolves-Ant(superstar), KAT (star)
Mavs-Luka(superstar), Kyrie (has fallen to Star lately, he’s still really good though)
Celtics-Tatum(superstar), Brown (star)

The remaining field falls in the below and it’s mainly because overall roster just isn’t good enough

Sixers-Embiid(superstar), Maxey(emerging star) but rest of cast sucks
Pacers-Halliburton(emerging star) really good pieces but not there yet
Thunder-SGA(superstar) really good pieces but not there yet imo
Knicks-Brunson(emerging superstar), need Randle to be healthy to truly contend otherwise could potentially beat Celtics

Cavs/Magic-both have young emerging stars but I don’t think anyone on roster will reach superstar status and surrounding cast isn’t good enough

Long post to say I love that Suns got swept, Bucks are out, Lakers are out, Nets in previous years did shite….the “buying a title” era is over

Dame/Giannis wasn't going to work because Doc Rivers is terrible in the playoffs. No adjustments. Awful defense and some of the worst rotations. They fired Bud for that showing? Wow.

I hope so. The superteam era where NBA teams became glorified AAU teams was borderline unwatchable.

All of this will be for naught in two to three years when Wemby starts to scratch his potential. He’s going to be in the Bird, Magic, MJ, Kobe, Lebron realm sooner rather than later.

Sort of a side question: Does anyone else think it's time to put Jokic in this tier? He's one of the 5 best basketball players I have ever watched.

ETA: Putting Kobe in that tier is an insult to Jordan and LeBron. Kobe was nowhere remotely close to either of them. Shaq was the better player on all three of those Lakers title teams. He was put on a pedestal because he made mean faces late in games but is statistically the most overrated late game/clutch player of all time.

I put them in the other tier baw, their style of play and supporting cast isn’t enough to win a ship but it’s better than going out in the first round

Dragging terrible Cavs rosters to the Finals in 2007 and 2018 is more impressive than anything he ever did in Miami.

Lebron had talent around him in Miami. A lot of it. Hasn’t had that much in LA (won the Covid bubble championship which should be an asterisk) and didn’t with Cleveland either (the Cavs title is by far his most impressive).

no he didn't. Wade was on 2 bad knees. Haslem was undrafted for a reason. Chalmers was mediocre at best. Ray Allen was still very good but not elite. no consistent 3 pt shooter.

I’ve never been as high on Kobe as I was on the other names. I really added him simply to try not to derail the thread. MJ already changed the nature of the SG. Kobe was the Great Value brand of MJ.

The other guys I listed were physical freaks who literally re-wrote the rules and expectations for their positions. Wemby is in that category.

I don’t know if Jokic is. We’ve had super skilled bigs before. I think Jokic is what the old heads talk about with Arvydas Sabonis. Super skilled passer, shooter, scorer, but not going to wow you with his athleticism. You can win championships with him as your guy but he’s not going to make you rethink the flow and nature of the game.
