Everyone should eat their food how they like it, but in Georgia, the term "sugar in your cornbread" means something very different.

Sugar doesn't belong in cornbread
It doesn't, but I have to put a little in there or the wife and kids won't eat it.

Good post. Brings back memories of my now dearly departed maw maw cooking cush cush when I was a kid.
Cush cush is cornmeal that's browned with oil in skillet. And you've got to stir it frequently so as not to burn it, similar to making your own roux.
Like the pic in the OP, it is usually served in milk. Some add sugar, some don't, and some add other things.

My Texas maternal grandfather ate his with buttermilk, and my Louisiana paternal grandfather ate his with sweet milk in a glass, for his nightly supper.

Cornbread with milk and chopped onion. Or without onion. Cornbread broken up in great northern beans. Fresh out of the skillet with butter is the best way to start a meal.
I have pan fried it like pancakes and had it for breakfast with butter and cane syrup.
It works well with lots of stuff and puts weight on me like crazy

It has been a loooong time. Fond memories of being at my grandmother's home as a kid.
