Can anyone explain to me why the Falcons did go Penix in Round 1?

It would at least make some sense if Penix was a project and not ready to go.

There is a reason that he isn't a GM in the League anymore.

People keep comparing this to the Rodgers/Love situation but what made those moves smart is Green Bay had QBs expected to be top 5 picks fall all the way to them in the last few picks of the 1st round. They got great value. The Falcons reached for a guy most considered as a mid round talent as if they were desperate for immediate QB help. If Penix fell to the 2nd or 3rd round and the best of your board was gone, maybe take him. But not when you had the chance to take your pick of any defensive player in the entire draft.

Penix isn’t a project. He played 6 years of college ball with a ton of reps. He is either ready right now as the elite talent you think he is to take him at 8, or he never will be. As a Falcons fan, I’d honestly love for Cousins to raise hell and demand a trade and see if a team like the Giants would give up a 2nd and 3rd for him.

Bad organizations stay bad

It’s usually owners steering the stupidest of choices but ATL deserves everything they ask for.

When the best thing a franchise has going for it is the cheap concession stand prices it says everything you need to know.

Apparently the GM didn't listen. Orhorhoro? This early? Bad pick.

Many NFL experts have seconded my instant take in the draft thread that it was the worst draft decision in NFL history.

Atlanta GM has an NFL job. Lombardi is unemployed and was fired by 4 teams.

General manager drafted a quarterback in the first round primarily cuz he was adamantly against signing Kirk Cousins to that big deal. That move came directly from the owner. The other reason at quarterback was drafted in the first round because he is black.

This was an outright and overt insubordination by The General manager. I don't see any scenario where he keeps his job.
