What were the Falcons thinking?

Can someone explain why they signed Cousins and drafted Penix?
The Saints pick wasn't sexy but it was needed. The falcons pick puzzles me. I dont see Penix as a franchise guy especially with the injury history and inaccuracies he showed when pressured and he had to move off his spot.

That cousins is 35 years old and Penix could be a franchise QB.

If you think Penix is a franchise qb you 110% take him. It’s the unquestioned right move if you have him ranked highly. Guys tend to do well when they can sit a year or so. Kurt is 35 and coming off a bad injury.

They suck at QB
Signed an average QB
Drafted a potential stud QB
Where’s the problem?

I don't see it. Put pressure in his face and his accuracy went out the window.

Then why'd you give him 180 mil?

Exactly. Sign a big contract and then draft another QB. I dont understand it. They had a bunch of other needs.
This has to be a F grade and I'm happy about it.

They owe Kirk 90 mil guaranteed lol, can get out after 2 years. Why not just stick with a scrub if you were going to draft a qb?

Because I think they likely want to see what they have with all these high first round skill players. Kurt will give you a couple of serviceable+ years to evaluate the young guys.
I don’t think there is a saints fan out there that wouldn’t trade rosters right now if they’re being honest.

You’re 100% right, I think the reason this pick is getting so much scrutiny is nobody viewed Penix as a top 10 pick. He was more late teens to second round sort of guy.

For sure. I’m not the biggest fan of him. Actually kinda thought that some of his passes hung for awhile when o watched a few of their games. But I’m far from an nfl talent evaluator. I don’t hate the move at all if FO feels like he’s a franchise guy. Likely won’t get another top 8 draft spot with all that young talent.

So you sign an old QB coming off a bad (your words) injury to a massive deal to be your QB for a year or two?

Agent Fontenot doing work. Well done, Saints. The Falcons don't need help screwing up, but y'all sent us the worst drafter in your front office, apparently

For a lot of money no?

Ehh, going market rate for a veteran average-above average QB. It’s a lot of money, but it’s the going rate nowadays.

It’s basically a 2 year deal and they can be done with him if it’s not working out and they obviously had the cap space and then some. They’ve invested so much in high first round picks at TE, wr, and running back that they have to get something going with those young guys. They’re taking multiple cracks at it.
Like us they’re FAR from being a contender but at least they seem to be moving toward the future instead of plugging a hole or two while waiting to get right financially. I kinda envy their willingness to look forward.

Pennix is 24 years old. If Cousins plays 3 years, Pennix will be 27 before becoming the starter. That coupled with his injury history and how he fell apart in the face of pressure makes this a bit of a head scratcher for me.
They also needed pass rushers and had their pick of them at the pick.
Then you also have Cousin’s who can’t be happy that you are picking his replacement instead of somebody who can help him win now.

I have no problem with the pick. Pennix is not NFL ready right now and needed to go somewhere where he would be in the bullpen for most of his rookie deal. Like Jordan Love. He gets that in Atlanta.
The problem is that they apparently didn't tell Cousins their intentions. They just said to him that they would be taking a QB at some point, not that they targeted Pennix. According to Diana Russini, he's not happy about that.

I agree with that too.
I don’t think developing a guy is a bad idea. But pick a younger guy with more upside in a later round. Get a Michael Pratt, Spencer Rattler or Joe Milton. Then take another mid-round QB next year.
Upsetting your QB by taking an old rookie and having a loss opportunity of not getting a player who will play a year or two is a head scratcher.
But who knows, Pennix might be Joe Burrow and become all pro and dominate for a decade.

Valid points. But they couldn’t have found someone else to fill the gap for cheaper?
Also, it’s coming out that cousins camp is not happy at all with this.
