I wrote a whole long thing and it got erased. Short story, yes.
My mom had to call me, when she learned, and ask if I was diddled by a priest, years after he died, who was a family friend and showed up on a list. The dude was a highly respected priest at a Jesuit university (SLU). Father Frank. Can’t remember his last name at the moment. Fortunately I was not diddled.
Also, when I was in catholic grade school there was a dude named Deacon Jeff. Don’t think I ever knew his last name he was just Deacon Jeff. It became widely known Deacon Jeff was asking young boys during confession if they were sinning by jerking off. Deacon Jeff was not arrested but was reassigned to some other parish far away.
I haven’t been to church in 20+ years so I don’t know that many priests. Of the few I’ve been around a significant percentage of them are creeps who should be under the jail.

Pro tip: they did. See my first-hand post above.

Okay so that guy denying it is just a devout catholic that doesn’t want to face the harsh reality because it would destroy his entire world view?

No. The sexual abuse should never happen because the Church should perform at a higher standard than mainstream society does. The pedophilia and sexual abuse happen at a rate very similar to the general population, and that is unacceptable because the Church should be held to a higher standard and should not have any at all. I agree with you there.
However, I would say that the amount of charity that the Church does is much, much higher than the average organization or individual does. It would be a huge detriment to society to lose that.

I’m not denying the church benefits lots of people, but do you understand the Catholic Church helped hide pedophilia, and this was coming from the very top?

Once again, the prevalence of pedophiles in the Church is no higher than the general population statistically.
I hear you though. The Church is held to a higher standard and rightfully so. The rate should be 0% pedophiles and predators. I would like to apologize for any harm done to you or anyone else by a Catholic clergy member.
I do know that in the diocese of Houma-Thibodaux that I’m in that there’s a zero-tolerance policy now among active priests, new seminarians are very thoroughly scrutinized and vetted, and there are currently no priests in any ministry that have ever been accused of sexual misconduct.

So just a little bit of pedophilia is ok. Got it.

Deacon Jeff was in Houma.
ETA I think there is a Deacon Jeff in Houma now. I’m pretty sure it’s not the same deacon Jeff that was in Houma 30 years ago.

Here’s one of many sources available on the internet.
Apparently sex abuse happens at a higher rate than it does within the Catholic Church in many different settings that our kids are in on a frequent basis. It happens at school from teachers and other educators, it happens in recreational sports from coaches, it happens in broken families with step parents, etc., etc.

How long ago was this? The new policies in Houma-Thibodaux are within the past few years as a response to the sex abuse scandal, so they’re pretty recent.

The fact that we are even having this conversation shows how F’d up the Catholic church is. Their charitable contributions do not make up for destroying kids lives, hiding it, lying about it, all from from the very top.
Now the NGO including the Catholic Church are enticing and recruiting kids from third world countries to come here. All under the guise of humanitarian aid. Nonsense. Most of us know the real reason.
The Catholic Church is an evil organization that will never change. It should be burned to the ground.

Well yeah. They still do it.

quote:I’m a practicing Catholic and disgusted by the way the church has handled its pedophiles. It’s not fair to the good priests and clergy. The fact there someone has to state that there is a zero-tolerance policy for the parish. I mean, isn’t that’s the accepted standard by good people and parents for everything, everywhere? Why even need to state zero tolerance for something so serious touching kids.

quote:that’s not what I asked. Stop avoiding the question. Did the church as an institution help cover sexual abuse? Yes or no? I’m not asking how many actually took part in pedophilia I’m asking who all was involved in covering it up
Once again, the prevalence of pedophiles in the Church is no higher than the general population statistically.

In over 70% of child abuse cases, the parent is the perpetrator...
