The extent of my smoke alarm knowledge and past experience is that battery always goes out around 2am and will beep incessantly every 20 seconds at a frequency that is impossible for an adult human to ignore. A kid on the other hand is impervious to that noise and can quite easily function with it. Also it is usually placed in a ceiling location that will require the skills of expert rock climber or a JLG lift to get to.
