Those who were violent, should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
These are the people who typically get the big sentences.

I acknowledge that idiots could be coaxed into the Capitol building... because mobs are like that, easily manipulated
The people who ONLY did this weren't all charged and at worst got a misdemeanor with some supervision.
There are like 5 classes of J6ers
1. People involved in larger conspiracies like the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys.
2. People who were violent
3. People who obstructed Congress
4. People who only effectively trespassed
5. People who were at the capitol grounds but weren't involved in 1-4.
There is this narrative that everyone 1-5 is being treated by the government like the guys in groups 1-3, when that's not true. On the flip side, there is a narrative that 1-3 don't exist, when that's also not true.
Now, if the Supreme Court says that the law making the behavior of group 3 was not properly interpreted, then that group is eliminated and we only have 4.

Even my desire to eliminate most criminal laws doesn't include trespassing and violent crimes

It's still playing out IMO. J6 caused Dem / Fed overreach towards Trump which lifted him to the nomination without seriously campaigning (he was tied with RDS prior to the raid on MAL).
And what if it causes him to become ineligible via Congressional Act?
"Still playing out" cuts both ways.

Should we say the same for Civil rights protestors in the 60s?

insurrection
That was no insurrection. In a country with a second amendment, for one to call that an insurrection is blatantly ignorant. Fact is you know this, yet choose to act as a pawn in your own existence.

It seems that everyone prefers that government tread lightly on protesters that they agree with.

There are causes worthy of protests that can venture into misdemeanor territory.
The civil rights were one of those causes.
Whatever stupidity the idiots at J6 believed was not.
There is some point between those 2 where a debate can be had, but those 2 are on such distant poles they're not comparable.
ETA: This is a major issue with whataboutism. People are bad at making legitimate comparisons. I know you were using an extreme example, but it's a good illustration for the class.

Like he said,

You should find the idea that the "justice" system takes politics into account when handing down punishment repulsive.

I'm not saying they were correct in their beliefs,
But if they sincerely believed that a high tech illegal coup was taking place and that they were saving the country then we should expect that behavior, otherwise they would be cowards.

It was enough for congress to convene and pass legislation.

Not a very impressive day for you. Way way over the top on nearly everything across the board, and I can tell you’re throwing out conclusions on a number of things without knowing what you’re talking about. Self-confidence is a very beneficial trait, but it can get away from you quickly and start producing negative results.

Sure. When has this charge been used before? It’s certainly happened before.

I have a solution for this.
Hence my earlier comment:

The issue of criminality is above J6ers.

They're idiots.
Again, comparing a literal mob of idiots (violent ones, at that) pushing complete lunacy is not comparable to fighting for basic civil rights of non-whites and women.

Ok, I guess.
