That was my thoughts too. Why even have insurance if they’re just going to get a pass when it’s time to, umm, do their job?

But on second thought, if I'm the insurance company and shipping company, I'll argue in court that the state/federal government should have had concrete protectors in place. That almost certainly would have prevented the bridge from suffering that kind of damage. And I'll point out that a ship hitting the bridge supports was a foreseeable act, based on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge incident in Tampa many years ago. This whole tragedy was foreseeable and preventable, and the government responsible for the maintenance of the bridge bears a great deal of responsibility.
