"The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe with blood for centuries."
Just a reminder.

If I've learned anything over the years it's this:
-people have an innate desire to worship
-if it's not an established religion it will be the state
-you don't want people worshipping the state

Your God is the state itself.

Wrong.
The purpose of separation of church and state was to assure churches the state wasn’t going to meddle in church affairs. Somewhere, someone played the reverse card on it.

Yeah I think you have to consider the concept of separation of church and state as they were thinking about it at the time in light of the fact that the primary reason European settlers made the extremely tough voyage to America in the first place was to escape religious persecution and the stark lack of “freedom of religion.”

Are you saying that it shouldn't work both ways? That the church should in fact be able to meddle in state affairs?

James Madison was an integral part of the writing of the Bill of Rights. He grew up in Virginia which was heavily tied to the Church of England (Anglican Church in the colonies). Madison had a family friend who was a Baptist preacher who was jailed by the colony since he preached a church doctrine other than that of the Anglican Church. Madison, like other Virginians, paid taxes to the colony who used some of the tax revenue to SUPPORT Anglican churches and help pay Anglican preachers. No other denominations received such support.
Easily findable in any book on the writing of the Constitution or a biography of him.

That history is amazingly bloody. It's why so many people fled to the colonies to escape it. You can get a scholarship to Duke if you can prove you're descended from a Huguenot. They fled France and landed in North Carolina, founding Duke.

It was to keep the government out of the church business

Our nation was dedicated to God. Separation of church and state means that we do not have a state established church, like the Church of England. We have freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.

The purpose of the first amendment was for congress and the federal government to be unable to interfere with state religions.
8 of the 13 original colonies had state religions.

In geologic time, look how quickly we went from caves to Robots.
Chances are pretty good it is not the first time.

Absolutely. A preacher should be able to guide their flock on political matters. There is absolutely no reason a preacher, priest, rabbi, iman, whatever shouldn't be able to tell their congregation what a particular politician or bill means to their way of life.
None at all.

So you're refuting a founding father?

So James Madison was wrong?
And you're more knowledgeable about the founding fathers mindset than him?

As others have said, this fictious "separation of church and state" concept was intended to prevent government from dictating the specific beliefs and practices of the citizens, not keep religion away from the public square. The founders, themselves, were very religious and prayed publicly in their official capacities, setting aside national days of prayer.

Agree.
Separation of church and state is a Thomas Jefferson phrase used in a letter he wrote to a group of Connecticut Baptist preachers while he was President.
What’s ironic is that there were 2 factions concerning the BoR being added to the Constitution. One group felt it wasn’t needed since the Constitution itself protected the rights of citizens. The other wanted it included so as to leave no doubt of the rights of citizens. Think of the shat show we’d be in now if the BoR had not been included..

No.

Nope. I read his actual writings to see his intent was for the state to stay out of the church's business, not the church out of the state's business.
