I've thought about this as a prompt by this board many times. It's becoming harder to figure out where the world is headed in terms of our kid's futures.
Me? If I had a son today, I believe I would sincerely debate the 4 year degree plan at 18 and advise to ease into life/debt and suggest something that's not going away. I would suggest doing dual credit classes in HS, then choosing becoming a firefighter. Low cost of entry to become a paramedic first, then pivot and have aims at a good city position w an FD. Most cities also offer financial assistance for college reimbursement, so, he could further his growth w limited or maybe no student debt. Due to scheduling, advise to moonlight via his own small business/labor work to supplement earnings. Doesn't matter if it's hanging plantation shutters on off days.
Guess I'm trying to say it's an attractive municipal job formula allowing for low cost of entry and great side hustle potential. Nice balance of family life as well. Do it all in Salt Lake or the like and live a great life.

If you have to ask someone else what you should go to college for, you aren’t ready. Take a year off and go do something you think you might like. If you are interested in building in construction, go get an entry job at a construction company and actually give a shite about the job. Show up on time and give a good effort.
After a year, you may hate it or you may love it. If you hate it, you have made money and eliminated something from your list. I assure you this much, it won’t take you a year to figure out you hate construction.
I make around 150k as a concrete superintendent and I have an accounting degree. I enjoy what I do and I’m good at it. There is money anywhere you are willing to put in the work.

Don’t go to college. Become a licensed plumber

Trades. There’s already a shortage, it will only get worse, construction continues to stay strong. He will always have a job and can almost name his price if he excels in a trade.
Edit: Also, it gives a young man one hell of a sense of purpose.

Would you recommend trades to a kid with potential to do more?

Not necessarily. Can you list exactly what gift you're referring to, though? What's the best way to assess a 16 year old's orthopedic surgeon chops? Deer season?
Or not. Stay mute.

Depends on the kid. Does he have a clear path and a plan for going into a field like engineering or medicine? Then no. Does he not know what he wants to do and will declare a major like political science (speaking from experience, here)? Then he should look hard into a trade instead. Maybe he decides it is not for him, but an English speaking man with a good head on his shoulders can go far in a skilled trade.
