Why am I not surprised? Decent in an "aw shucks" kinda way, I guess, but lacking the pwer and desperation of a really good love story. How about the talkies, or really, anything released after 1955.

Haha, yeah I gotta try. Usually I give 1 or 2 others...I'll throw in:

Before Sunrise
Roman Holiday (although not after 1955)
All the Real Girls (underrated and I doubt anyone has seen it)

And I'll agree with Big Fish

Before Sunrise

Loved it. I love a movie that's basically just one long, uninterrupted conversation, but is still interesting enough to maintain my interest. The sequel is okay, but I was kind of depressed when they made it. The were older and more jaded, no longer the carefee kids they were.

All the Real Girls

Never seen it. I'll check it out.

Eh, close enough.

And yes, to the above poster, Princess Bride absolutely counts. Good one.

Also, there was a great, obscure 80's movie with Peter O'Toole, Mariel Hemingway and Virginia Madsen called "Creator" which is a pretty good choice.

Another good one, but I think Before Sunset is better.

Not sure how I missed this thread before, but I gotta chime in.

To me, the love story between Li Mu Bai and Shu Lien in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is fricking heartbreaking. Two warriors who put duty and honor before their own feelings and desires. I don't know that I've ever wanted two people to get together in a movie more than I did those two bad asses.

As for TV, I'm sure we can all agree that the doomed love affair of Michael and Katy on The Office this season showed love at its core. Especially inter-office romance.

And blueboy, I gotta respectfully disagree about The African Queen. I find that movie painfully outdated and corny. Painful to watch.

"Oh Chaaaaahly!"
"Yeah Rosey Girl!"

Only time I've welled up while reading subtitles. And of course you also have the forbidden relationship between the young girl and boy. Good choice.

No offense taken. I've just loved it since I first saw it at the age of 9. I don't need special effects or contemporary dialogue to enjoy something, but I can see how older stuff can rub a lot of people the wrong way.

And the AFI strongly disagrees with you as well.

Come on, man. Don't you have enough of a soul to appreciate Charlie's wish to marry her just before they are to be executed?

I hear ya blue. I really wanted to like this because I had heard so many great things about it.

And the ending was pretty good, but everything before that I just couldn't get into. Just something about the way the story was presented made it feel like even though they were in this crazy situation, that they were never in any real danger. I never felt for a second that they wouldn't be alright.

I'm a big fan of the classics, but this one left me disappointed.

Yeah, that's a problem with a lot of older movies. There is a difference between depicting realistic danger (i.e. NO action until the dangerous places along the river were traversed) and modern movie danger, which the audience is constantly reminded of just to keep the blood going.

But this isn't an action movie thread. Simply put, The African Queen is a fantastic metaphor (allegory, really) for the relationship between a man and a woman. Charlie and Rose truly need each other, not just to drive the boat to the lake, but to balance out each other's extreme personalities, either of which would never survive wihout the other.

Watch it again with that in mind. If you still don't like it or even understand what I mean, I'll give you your money back.

I just saw it recently, so I'll need to give it some time before I try it again. You make some good points, and plenty of my buddies whose opinions I trust in movies agree with you. Maybe I just had one of those weird bad viewing experiences.

The same thing happened when I watched Wonder Boys. For some reason I hated it the first time I saw it, but when I finally broke down and watched it again it was like I was watching a totally different movie.

So true, I've got the Cinema Paradiso and Amelie soundtracks. Also, Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli both do excellent covers of Cinema Paradiso.
