If an elective and unnecessary procedure inhibits a major life function - is there any line?

You going to stop men from getting vasectomies? Or women from getting hysterectomies?

Are you going to ban elective limb lengthening procedures?

We can do this all day. How about we let consenting adults, consent and be adults.

A schizophrenic can't ethically or legally consent to get his toenails trimmed. If you want to argue anyone who would consider gender-affirming surgery by default does not have capacity to make medical decisions, then thats your right I guess

As long as they go back in the closet, leave society alone and no money comes out of my pocket I don't care what the mentally ill do.

No, and I expected you'd raise the point. I'm guessing a lot of practitioners would hesitate and sternly advise/warn against some 23 year old getting either, no? And why is that?

I don't know what they do - are they sound medical procedures in your view?

So no limits? I want to voluntarily amputate my arm and I'm of sound mind, no ethical issue presented to the profession.

Well first, yes, that's my argument. Second, even setting aside the reality that someone with some variation of gender dysphoria and willing to consider major reconstructive surgery are, as a category, mental ill and lacking capacity, the reality is that nearly all of them suffer from other major mental/behavioral disorders.

If your starting point is "the medical profession shouldn't preclude any surgeon from doing any procedure so long as informed consent is obtained, regardless of the likely harm/uselessness/etc. of the procedure" - ok. I struggle to believe that's really what you think, though.
