“Travel” ball is fine. It gets tough when they are 12-13 and to find decent teams and competition you are on the road a bunch. As littles it is pretty chill. Except for the boom boxes blaring.
And I do promise you as the season progresses you will run into many more douches. As far as hard work? Hell I don’t know. My boy can play ball but I still have to hammer on his stubborn arse to study and do his chores.

This thread is hilarious with the amount of people that don't know anything about the subject. It got the responses that I expected from people with no experience.
This has been my first year with "travel" ball as my son is playing 7U. 95% of you are wrong about everything. The only one that seems to have experience is lsu777.
From my experience, we don't travel. Every tournament has been in BR and will continue to be. We are not planning on playing fall ball either.
The level of competition is night and day compared to rec ball. Lots of teams are turning routine double plays, nasty back hands at short, and low scoring. We had one game go 6 innings and finish 2-1 the other week. It's not the cult that this site thinks it is and I have only met 1 parent out of all the other teams that was a douche.
No, I'm not banking on my kid getting a scholarship, but that's not what it's about. Life is hard, jobs are hard, parenting is hard. He needs to learn that nothing good comes without extreme hard work and that's why we are doing this. He's loved every second so far and I do not regret it one bit. And lastly he's 6, so talk your shite, but I guarantee you he knows how to outwork the keyboard cowboys on this site.
99% of the people here have zero experience with travel ball and just repeat BS they have heard or think they know.
Prom and Ryno have kids in it and a couple others and they actually know wtf they are talking about.
as far as travel...my 8u kid did BR this weekend cause we had tickets for whole team to Bananas. other then that all tournament will be LC or Crowley with 1 in Beaumont.
the play is night and day difference and as i stated before, parents are better in travel than rec and it can be dangerous for the really good kids to play with kids that have no clue how to even catch
and i know it sounds crazy to some but it builds on one another year after year. SO if you only play rec until 9...well you are not going to be closed to skilled enough to make a good 9u team. you are going to be relegated to a AA team at best. Well then you are playing other kids your skill level while the 9u majors kids are playing against much better competition the whole year. it continues and by 11u the difference between a majors team and AA is usually going to be night and day. to the tune where most majors teams are going to beat a AA team by 25 runs pretty easily.
so now the kid is behind and the only way to catch up is tons and tons of lessons. problem is the majors kids are doing the same and lifting weights. they are going to pitching, fielding and hitting coaches and spending 5+ hours a week practicing individually on top of that.
so how is the AA kid catching up? by 9 he is so far behind that unless he is just a really blessed athlete...its too late.
i dont like it, but thats the way it is. These kids would have a chance if Louisiana had the texas model of having 30-40 kids on the freshman team. This allows the kids not as skilled but possibly hitting puberty to have a chance to develop. But because we are a state run by frick ups...we dont have the tax base to support 2-3 coaching staffs and 2-3 full fields like the big texas schools have.
so we are stuck with parents having to make a decision if they want their kids to even have a chance to play HS ball at 8 which is fricking insane. but when the big schools are taking 8-12 and you have 40+ kids trying out.....wtf are you going to do?
it has nothing to do with college. if anyone is doing travel baseball for a college scholarship they are dumb AF and are too dumb to be a parent to begin with. Even worse if anyone thinks its their retirement plan, thats just legit stupid AF.
i dont like the way things are but I didnt create the system. Just have to deal with it the best i can for my kids so they can play the game they love for as long as posisble and frankly I do not care if it pisses off half the OT who never learned to compete in anything.

Yup.
You raise them to all get a ring when only the winners should get rings.
So now instead of the trophy being the award the little kiddos only care about the shiny fake ring and the flat bill hat at the end of the day.
Made sports worse off and those kids now think everyone gets something and its just not true.

After they get a box full of em they give them away or lose them prior to leaving the park. Mine has a few he is proud of. Big tourneys with big fields of good teams. But the average bullshite tourney with bad teams and small numbers….nope. They know when they have earned them.

My experience was that we played in 6 or 7 tournaments in the fall. We traveled an hour away for 5 of them. They practiced for 2 hours twice a week plus travel. Every kid took extra hitting lessons from the head coach which was another hour once a week with travel. That's 5+ hours committed to practice per week with the team excluding any practice at home, plus 4+ hours of driving per weekend, several hours of sitting around, and 2 games that were an hour long each on Saturday and Sunday. For some people that's fine, but for us that was way too much.
thats cool it was too much for you. i have 2 in it so trust me i understand. It was too much for my oldest as baseball wasnt his true love.
but that is the kind of time it takes to be good...well at anything. its the type of effort that makes people learn to work.
as far as the travel...depends on your coach/team. my 8 year old never travels except for this past weekend because of banana ball. my 11 year old rarely traveled further than 45 min when he was that age, maybe 1 or 2 tournaments. For some, they are not willing to give up that amount of time and i certainly understand
as far as 6-7 tournaments in the fall....thats ridiculous. no team should be doing that much. The houston and beaumont teams do and its DUMB AF. They play way way too much.

Add to that all of the kids having $300 bats, $150 gloves, $100 glasses, ridiculous arm sleeves, eye black, gold chains, mullets, etc, and it was not even remotely something we enjoyed
you dont have to do that. Marucci has tent sales were you can get last year model bat for cheap. or you can buy used. gloves...until they get older...you can do the cheap gloves. all the other stuff...thats on you as a parent. you dont have to be liek every other parent and give your kid everything if you cant afford it.

thank you.
and why does the OT care so much about what moms post on facebook? it triggers all the fat out of shape guys on here for some reason

Back in the day, there was one league. Youd have 50-60 kids trying out for 15 spots on a team.
It was awesome, inexpensive and uber competitive.

Lol have you ever been to a tournament? Only first and second get rings. That's how it should be.
When I was a kid we got a participation trophy at the end of the year during rec ball....and that was STUPID.

They play against the same 4 teams in every tournament. It wasn't just them.

Actually the opposite was the issue. They didn't like that I could afford it and I chose not to. They thought we weren't committed because I wasn't wasting $600 on bullshite for my kid to keep up with the Joneses. My wife and I had a pretty good laugh when they asked if anyone wanted some absurd color matching arm sleeves and the moms were tripping over themselves in the group chat to get 3 for little Johnny and 4 for little Billy.

little league cost like 200 now so nothing is inexpensive
everyone on here likes to claim travel is killing the sport this or that. two things
1) baseball participation is the highest it has been in over a decade. the blip the last couple years was due to covid, not travel.
2) everyone likes to hold up the DR as the way...those kids are going to academies and playing baseball full time as early as 10, most are in the academy by 12 where they live, go to school, train and sleep. they train 8+ hours a day.

But if you aren’t playing aaa by 12, not gonna make a good hs team and most of the time if you aren’t playing majors ball by then, might make team but won’t ever play. It’s gotten dumb competitive at the big schools
This is some of the dumbest shite I've ever read. You don't know what these kids can really do until puberty.
And I coach travel bawl and played my entire life

A big reason why baseball is losing its foothold in America. The entry point at the youth level prices out everything below the upper middle class.

No, they can play all they want, just not on a team. They go home, work hard, improve and make it next year. Thats how things work in America.
Lessons learned, not everyone needs a participation trophy.

quote:your point isn't wrong but i think what you're missing is travel baseball is practically required from a young age to have a chance to make a decent varsity team.
My question is why is all the hated directed towards only baseball?
a good athlete can pick up basketball or football as an 8th or 9th grader and make the team and go on to be a very good player, maybe even college worthy. that's just not how baseball works.

are you around the top HS programs in the state?
go look up catholic's, Barbe's, West Monroe's starting line up and go see what teams they were on at 12 and get back to me. You are not going to find many starters that were not on high level teams at that age
puberty...so you mean strength and size? do you think they kids that are on the high level teams are not lifting? Do you think they are not following diets to gain weight too? do you think they arent on bat speed and velo programs?
puberty was a much bigger deal before everyone started weight training. the biggest difference maker now is if the kid is willing to work with how much he is eating, sleeping and if he is will to work his arse off in the off season. the kids at the biggest and best programs all do this.
