You didn’t answer the question, why should taxpayer funded institutions of higher learning be tied to athletics like they are.

Athletics is another form of artistic expression, and at the big boy schools, the athletic side is paid for by boosters anyways.

Because university are supposed to be places that provide universal (meaning well rounded) education. Is why you are required to take general education electives such as English and history for STEM majors and mathematics and sciences for non-STEM majors. Athletics provide opportunities for individuals to further round their education.

Stepping away from the philosophical side, it’s because these athletic offerings provide 2 things:
1. Increased exposure for the schools which in turn increased applications and increased funds
2. Increased camaraderie amongst the student populations which leads directly to increased donations from graduates as they age further increasing fund
