Am I doing it wrong? I’ve never had to diet.

You’re gonna burn out real quick eating under a thousand calories a day. And you’ll lose muscle mass.

I say that from experience because I was the typical yo-yo dieter who crashed hard on the front end but it never lasted. Never had energy and definitely didn’t get strong.
I’m finally at the point where when I cut, I’m much more patient and it’s so much easier to stick to. You can still eat really good food. Do a 500 calorie daily deficit and meet your body weight in grams of protein. That’s the magic elixir for me and many others.

I’m 5’8” 155. What should I do?

Well you’re obviously not obese so you probably just need to do a recomp. That’s definitely not eating under 1K calories. Do you lift weights? You could probably get away with eating at maintenance calories, start a solid weight training program and get at least 160 grams of protein a day. You’ll gain muscle and lose some pudge at the same time if you’re a beginner.

I have a gym membership but rarely go. I don’t lift. I use the machines. Thanks for the advice.

Eat more protein and lift weights, shoot for around 1800-2200 calories a day to maintain your weight. Honestly, when I was that size, I felt weak and tired. I was around 190 lbs when I felt chunky, and I'm 5'7". I got down below 160 over several months of calorie deficit, but felt horrible. Don't get me wrong, at first I felt great shedding extra weight. I was determined to get my body fat down enough to see my abs. I even dipped below 150 at one point, but I was skinny fat.
Trying to maintain below 160 and workout several days a week just wasn't working. So I shifted my focus to performance rather than the scale. Someone here mentioned worry about the weight you can lift, not the weight on the scale. So last April I started strength training again, 3-4 days a week. Over about 5 months I got back to around 175. I've been able to maintain that, +/- about 6-8 lbs, for the last 6 months.
If you're comfortable at your current weight, focus on 1800 calories, but try to up the protein, eat enough carbs to fuel workouts, and don't try to cut out fats completely. Your body needs all 3, just have to figure out a good ratio to give you fuel without excess calories.

This will make you thinner skinny-fat.
You need to lift weights and get in 160g of protein. Adding muscle burns more calories. Burning more calories while preserving muscle is how you lose the pudge. You preserve muscle by lifting weights, reminding the muscles to stay around, and by getting in enough protein to prevent the breakdown of muscle mass while burning calories above what you eat.

Listen to these guys…they know what they’re doing.
I can tell you from personal experience that if you cut too many calories your metabolism will tank and you won’t lose weight and you’ll feel like shite. I’ve been chipping away at my body fat % and actually had to make myself eat more when increasing activity….not less.

Any tips on how to deal with this insecurity?
Yeah make a plan to lose the belly fat and then stick to it until the insecurity is gone

Didn’t even eclipse 1k calories yesterday and plan to stay under 1k.
I don’t think that’s a good idea to maintain 1k or less calories. Even Dr. Now (My 600 lb Life surgeon) prescribes a 1200 calorie high protein, low carb diet. I’m currently eating a calorie deficit but I’m doing it while listening to my body. When I’m craving, I just feed myself protein and don’t worry about the calories.

I fought my weight for a long time. I finally got my head right and lost 60 lbs about 10 years ago. The weight is still off and I am in my 40’s and recently completed my first marathon.
These guys give a lot of good advice on diet execution and exercise.
I’ll add one tip from the mental side:
Accept the fact that you have made bad food/exercise choices for a while and the result of those choices is where you are at now. Don’t externalize the blame on whatever situation (work, kids, medical stuff etc) no matter how real they seem. The reality is for almost all of us there will always be those hindrances and distractions.
Accept that the choices that got you here were YOUR CHOICES. Once you truly do that the answer is easy on how to get out: MAKE BETTER CHOICES.
It took me a while to cross that hurdle mentally, but once I did, I got where I wanted to be. And stayed there.
