The road runs to the two mines that is the sole supplier of the quartz required to make the crucibles needed to refine silicon wafers.
There are no alternative sources known. From Conway’s Material World:

I thought for sure this was about Pinehurst #2

"If you flew over the two mines in Spruce Pine with a crop duster loaded with a very particular powder, you could end the world's production of semicon- ductors and solar panels within six months."
Now I’m curious about the this mysterious powder.

So the mines are just open holes that expose all of the quartz to powder dropped from the sky?

This definitely seems like something that should be broadcast to the public.

As far as the article goes, I've no idea of the validity of it, but
I go backpacking every year in the middle of the deep woods on a national forest and camp out for 4 days turkey hunting, and if you want a taste of what a life without computers would be like, go backpacking alone for a week with only the essentials and get a taste.
Aside from the breached reservoir dams, nuclear fallout, surprise tornadoes and hurricanes, etc., just the mundane act of finding suitable firewood within a reasonable walking distance becomes a problem after a few days of using up the resource within the immediate area, let alone cutting your finger, it getting infected, and googling to find out the nearest primary care clinic.
I agree to an extent about the ai, but the majority of us would be categorically fricked in every way imaginable within 6 months.

If it were really that dire the government would put a restricted airspace over those mines.
Probably not as big of a deal as this guy is leading you to believe
