Some fans here have this delusion that LSU was a constant top 3 recruiter at one time.

Nick Saban was consistently recruiting in the top 5 at LSU. It can be done. It’s a shame that he left before he really got to reap the benefits of the program he built.

He also finished with 2 classes outside the top 10

So if this class finishes like its predicted to Kelly will have a top 3/#6 and a #7 class according to composite
if you go by ON3 he will have 3 top 5 classes

Rivals was the only real rankings service when Nick was here

Not that it can’t happen, but these time periods may not be the best for comparison.

Saban was recruiting in the top 1 at LSU. The recruiting services didn’t know it, but he was. It wasn’t until later that the services realized that Saban knew better than anyone else who were the best high school players. Then they started adjusting their rankings according to whom he was recruiting. LSU fans called it the Bama Bounce, and they thought the services were pumping up Bama’s numbers. But that wasn’t it. The services were just cheating off of Saban.

According to 247 Saban had 2 Top 5 classes and 14th and 20th ranked classes.

There's no doubt he revived LSU with the help of one of if not the best support staff in CFB history, but his record wasn't consistent. Year 2 10-3, but year 3 8-5. Year 4 wins the NC at 13-1, but goes 9-3 the next year.

Kelly took over a team that was in just as poor shape as Saban did and has 2 10 win seasons to start. The 25 class looks to be one of LSU's best. Comparatively he's doing quite well and he's setting LSU up for a really solid run.

Not really. In his last two seasons, 2003 & 2004, he was top 5. 2000-2002 his best year was #15 I believe.

So he probably would have continued that based on what he did at Bama but that is pure speculation.

Take a look at Clemson before winning their first Natty and subsequently. Their recruiting stepped up considerably post NC1.

Recruiting is a big part of winning championships and seems more and more important every year. But winning also helps recruiting. It's a yin and yang thing.
