Garand Thumb stress tested a PSA Freedom Rifle and the barrel finally died at 6k rounds...

YouTubes
lots of info in this one and i might've gotten some of it wrong, but:
barrel groupings lost milspec MOA just over 6k rounds.
bolt extractor began to wear out around 5k rounds.
a full-auto was used to expedite the round count, but not in the form of a "burn-down" that most Gun Tubers do. towards the end of the video, GT mentions that it was 3 mags and cooled. you can see his pants change throughout the video so it was done over the course of a few days.
stock gas tube and gas block survived the test, but the tube was worn.
they had a guy from BEXAR ARMs come out and run spec tests on the BCG and barrel after the test.
- BCG was surprising still within spec although the top rails were worn significantly as it rode only the top of the receiver.
- barrel chamber had some serious machining marks.
- gas port was a bit worn mainly due to full-auto
"i would suggest this rifle for someone that isn't serious about shooting. If you want a duty grade weapon at the lowest price point, I suggest BCM. "
i wasn't expecting that response.

Well that's me then. I bought one 5 years ago and I bet I haven't put 500 rounds through it. 5,500 to go. It will last through my lifetime

I would add that the rifling looked great. The barrel likely needed all of the copper removed from shooting high grain .556.
ETA:
I've put at least 2k through mine at over 600 rpm.
They run quite...briskly.

And for a few hundred bucks you can rebuild it and make it new again.

I freaking hate that term. And while he can be entertaining and seems like a decent enough guy there's nothing about his resume that makes him an expert.

He knows his shite and shoots more in a week than most do in a lifetime.
He is a distinguished Rifleman and NRA High Master shooter.

I'm aware. I think he was a junior NCO trainer for SERE and I don't think he's ever been in combat or even deployed (I could be wrong there). He parlayed that into his Youtube channel and left the military when he was making more money with Youtube. I would have.
But even if he had a resume like a Larry Vickers (and he doesn't), that doesn't make him an expert on weapon design, metallurgy, fatigue fractures or any number of factors that go into weapon design. A weapon can function reliably through 6k rounds but it's not going to go bang for you when you need it to? Why? Why is that not "duty grade"?

i think GT's reasoning, in my opinion, is due to the barrel falling out of the standard M4 MOA spec of 4 MOA at the 6k mark. i'm not a vet, and i definitely haven't shot as much as GT has so i wouldn't know if that's the typical lifespan of a barrel for military/duty use. doesn't Daniel Defense barrel get at least 10k before dying?
6k is definitely alot for a normal citizen, and who's to say the same wear on the gun would be the same for a normal citizen shooting semi-auto 100% of the time?
i fell for the trap last year that a gucci gun is the way to go, and got rid of my Anderson. i upgraded to a DDM4v7. i can definitely tell the difference between them just by holding it. i have put more effort into the DD though and actually got it sighted in, and it's a tack driver. never came close to accomplishing that with the Anderson, and that's probably my own fault.
i say all that to say this, PSA is g2g for those on a budget. GT even said in the video:
"if you had to choose between a $400 rifle and $1000 worth of ammo vs a $1400 gucci rifle, get the rifle and ammo. i wouldn't trust someone with a gucci rifle that doesn't train with it."
i paraphrased it, but it was something like that.

They are right now. I got a BCM barreled upper with a BCM BCG for $510.

Well unlike Larry Vickers he's not an admitted felon and traitor.

They've been running a special for awhile now, free BCM BCG with barreled upper purchase.

Huh? The barrel life for an M4 is 6,000 rounds.
That's also what the Army set for the NGSW.
