LSU was fined $100K by the SEC because of fans storming the court. According to a press release by the conference, financial penalties are imposed for violations in all sports and range from $100K for a first offense, $250K for a second offense and $500k for a third and subsequent offenses. Interestingly, since this was a conference game, the fine is paid to the opposing institution (Kentucky). In non-conference games, the fine gets deposited into the SEC Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund.

I am having difficulty understanding this. I get it when the fans storm the football field and bring down the goal post.
But how do you control people walking on to the basketball court. I guess I am missing something here. So kindly explain how LSU was to keep the fans in the stands and for how long are they held hostage from going on the court.

This is a gross mischaracterization of that act.

I mean, it's not as if the fans have a right to even BE on the court, so to say they're being "held hostage" from going onto it is just silly.

If I'm Kentucky, then I'm taking that $100k and making a donation to the LSU Scholarship Fund. No need to hold onto that money because you took an L.

First, you pay for the right to sit in the stands, not enter the area of play.

Secondly, each school is supposed to have a plan for this and make announcements to discourage this from happening while the other team is still on the court.

Under the current rules, fans are allowed onto the court or field of play after the visiting team has left the field or court.

Here is a GIF of a man fighting the tyranny of being confined to the stands.
