Nvidia stock is driving markets across the globe

They were talking about them on BBC today. This company specializes in AI chips.
Just a barometer of where the worlds capital thinks the future is headed.
Up until the advent of the cell phone the fastest adopted technology (defined as the number of people using this tech) was refrigeration. For food, air conditioning, etc. Cell phones blew that number away (course there were a lot more people on earth to adopt it).
Given how fast cell phones caught on, wonder what AI will do in the next few years? Pretty spooky to think about, and I dare say not all doom and gloom as some have predicted.

I feel like an old fricker because I remember when NVidia was mainly a 3D graphics card manufacturer.

i was wondering what spiked my index funds price this morning. hell, i'll take it

That's what I thought Nvidia still was and kept wondering why their stock price shot up so much so fast.
Nvidia has been a good stock for a while now, but only a couple momths ago, their price was like $300-something a share. Now it's in the mid 700s. It's all CNBC talks about every day.

The insane runup on NVDA has been impressive but any time there's a run like this, it always ends up being a bubble.
I'm not saying NVidia is trash or anything, but that the market is in a feeding frenzy on it and feeding frenzies wane eventually.

They are.
Turns out, the same architecture thats really good at graphics is really good at machine learning as well. They didnt have to do a whole lot different than they already were. They just started making specialized cards with tons of the core types optimized for AI and ML

It's not an apples to apples comparison because AI development is being throttled and restricted by world governments.

Nvidia does the design, but their manufacturing is farmed out to TSMC in Taiwan.

Guess we know why the Pelosi's bought so much Nvidia stock a while back, lmao

And which country is getting rich off of it: the US or Taiwan?
You just killed muh manufacturing and you didn't even realize it.

The problem is that by outsourcing, you lose all of your domestic production capacity, which as we saw during COVID is a problem. You can't depend on foreigner suppliers, and a global just in time supply chain. The societal damage form losing these jobs is also catastrophic, a whole swathe of society is left broken.
Further, your suppliers eventually replace you. They start by building the parts you design, but as we've seen in China, they eventually use your funding, knowledge, and training, to develop their own domestic industry and replace you. Eventually designed in America and built in China becomes, designed and built in China.
The war in Ukraine is a good show of why our model doesn't work. The Russians retained a lot of their Soviet era manufacturing capacity, so while we haven't sent a single newly manufactured tank to Ukraine, the Russians have sent 100s, in addition to refurbished tanks.

Nvidia graphics cards are produced for $400 dollars in China and sold to Americans for $1,800.
these high end GPUs are capable of producing shadows and real time reflections in games and movies using AI. Nvidia Ray Tracing technology.
also another Nvidia only tech is DLSS(Deep Learning Super Sampling). pretty much uses AI to render a 720p,1080p,1440p at 4K. this enables weaker nvidia graphics cards to produce a sharper image without consuming too much power.

The horse and buggy manufacturers need to adapt with society.
The same people who refused to adapt and make themselves employable won't be able to work at high-level chip manufacturing outfits, either.

If you plan your economy based off the negative externalities of a once in a century pandemic, you're going to have a shitty economy.

Show me the Chinese equal to Nvidia.

The older model, sure.
The thing about an advanced economy is that we keep making new models because we are development/idea focused.

The war in Ukraine doesn't reflect shite about our military capabilities. If we were allowed to operate fully in Ukraine, we wouldn't hear about tanks because we would win in the air and via naval support of our air superiority.
Again, you're thinking about the military like you do with the economy and focus on suboptimal, tactile priorities.

Not all govts, and that does scare me. This was a program on BBC a few months ago, with some of our AI leaders gushing over the proactive moves the EU was taking.
Then the interviewer said "china, russia, iran, they havent been involved in these discussions, they have no guardrails. Its akin to a nuclear war and you are restricting the development of splitting the atom. You could wake up one day and...and...
Regulating in the Western world these days means choking it, and picking a winner for personal gain even if they are sub par.

Remember the CHIPs bill that was passed where ultimately 100s of billions will be invested. Remember when Pelosi had to fly to Taiwan and almost caused an international incident. The two coincided within weeks of each other and she took her son with her when she went. Hmmmm. They dont even hide the shat anymore.

I'm talking about companies and their market cap, not FPS capabilities
