Any of you done a day trip from Rome to Pompeii? We are doing a cruise from Barcelona to Rome in June. Will have Sunday pretty open and was debating doing this day long trip. My in laws (in their 70s) want to go as well as my 11 yr old. Any of you use a certain guide to take you? Any tips?

I have.
The first time I went to Europe was in the mid 1990s on a Globus tour. We had several days in Rome, and one was spent taking a tour bus ride to Pompeii. We enjoyed it. We left early in the morning and were back in Rome in time for dinner. It was a long ride, but we wanted to see Pompeii, and we did.

Didn’t go to Pompeii but a day trip would be easy. The train to Naples is like 1 1/2 hours and Pompeii is an easy drive from there. You could train down and back same day easily

No guide needed. Take the train from Naples to Pompeii.

Yeah I just got back from Pompeii. Took a bus from Rome. Stopped on the sea as well. Felt rushed in pompeii though.

Check out Rome in Limo. We did that a few years back and was fantastic. We signed up for Rome to Amalfi Coast with Pompeii visit/tour along the way.
They have a ton of options and I highly suggest the private tour route if you can swing it. It’s basically a road trip to anywhere you want to go with a private guide that knows everyone and everything in the area.

We booked a bus tour from Rome to Pompei with a quick stop in Naples. It was through our hotel. The guide at Pompei was an odd old guy overly keen on the erotica. I wouldn't do it again...long ride...rushed at Pompei.
One Rome tip... we found extremely long lines at the Coliseum but took a chance buying an on-the-spot guided tour from an Irish kid trying to make a few bucks. He wasn't the guide, just a hawker. The tour turned out to be great. Most importantly, we got to use the tour entrance... no wait.

We did the Rome to Pompeii on our own about 10 years ago on a family vacation. The high speed train from Rome to Naples then a local train to Pompeii. It's a short walk to the ruins entrance from the local Pompeii city station.
Seeing ruins was an excellent day trip. Enjoy!

The Bullet train to Naples is super smooth and from there you can get to Pompeii.

We took the train to Naples then another to Pompeii. It was easy. Saw what we wanted to see then ate pizza in Naples before taking the train back to Rome.

These are the "menus" from the whorehouse in Pompeii. They were wild.
The ruins are amazing.
. Though for me the highlight was the Amalfi coast and I would like to spend more time in the coast.
I did a fast trip only half day pompeii, half day positano. 2 day venice, one day Como, 3 day Rome. 1/2 day Milan.

We did a Pompeii visit as a cruise excursion from Naples. Pretty cool. Even from Rome it should be an easy trip.
