The mentality behind it certainly existed. One of the reasons Alabama football holds its position of prominence in the state is because the state was looked down upon by the rest of the country. Football was the only thing they could hang their hat on.

I disagree. I think the state of Alabama is actually pretty nice. upward trending economy also. Beaches are nice, foothills in the northeast, good food, very friendly people.

The idea that Alabama is a backwater podunk state with nothing going for it besides Tide football is ignorant.
