I can tell you one that is OVER-appreciated:

The Goonies

My answer to the original underappreciated request however is:

Total Recall

The movie with Fred Savage and his little brother and Howie Mandel playing a monster. They come from under your bed and light kills them. Anybody remember the name?

I think it was "Little Monsters" if I remember correctly. I liked that movie too when I was a kid.

A few of the most underappreciated movies from the 80's have to be:

"The Right Stuff"

"Starman"

"License to Drive"

"Empire of the Sun"

"National Lampoons European Vacation"

"Airplane II: The Sequel"

Not underappreciated, but did mostly poor or mediocre box-office(some were Indie films in their day..not national releases,) and are unknown to many folks, despite their great reviews and awards..

Fandango
Midnight Run
Cinema Paradiso
Drugstore Cowboy
House Of Games
Things Change
Eight Men Out
