You tend to step up your spending to match the double income, thereby exposing yourself if one of you loses their job. We live on a single income, have investment accounts and life insurance. I have a business degree and professional certifications. I have had to step in when we were younger and he was laid off. I don’t make as much as him but covered mortgage and insurance until he could get another job. If we’d bought a home, cars, vacations, assuming both of our salaries-we’d have been fricked.

We don't need my wife's income to live, but we do if we want to go on vacations, and if we ever want to retire.
